Nicholas is one of those special students who make Medina City Schools proud and will be remembered long after leaving Medina High School. His intellect, authenticity, discipline, kindness, and ambition have made him a highly admired and respected young man and leader. He is truly a memorable student, athlete, and future leader deserving of admiration and respect.

Medina High School Debate Team Competing in March State Championship Tournament

Over the weekend of Feb 4-5, the MHS Debate Team competed in the OSDA District championship tournament in an attempt to qualify for the team’s 20th consecutive trip to states. As a result of that and other qualifying opportunities, all 30 members of this year’s debate team will be competing at the state championship tournament in March. This has never happened before and sets a state record for the number of debaters from one team to go to states. This also pushes the total number of MHS state qualifiers in debate to over 300 since the team’s founding 29 years ago.

Medina High School Athletics Department Announces new Varsity Boys Soccer Coach

The Medina High School Athletic Department is pleased to announce the new Varsity boys soccer head coach. Doug Coreno will take the helm and lead the Bees beginning in the 2022 season. He will replace former head coach Simon Spelling.

Coreno was previously the head coach of Medina High School’s girl soccer program from 2008 to 2018. During his time, the team went 165-25-30 overall, they brought home the 2009 Division I State Championship, made an appearance in the 2015 Division I State Final Four and won the District Championship in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2018. To add to Coreno’s accolades, he was named Conference Coach of the Year in 2008, 2010, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Coreno currently coaches with the Cuyahoga Valley Soccer Academy and the Medina Rangers. From 2000 to 2013, he coached with the Cleveland Futbol Club achieving two State Cup Championships with the U11 and U18 girls, numerous OYSAN State Cup Championships, and Runner-up finishes with a variety of boys and girls age groups. Teams under his direction have been successful in top-level club competitions including USYSA Regionals, Midwest Regional League Premier Division, Raleigh CASL Shootout Showcase, WAGS, and Jefferson Cup.

Coaching has been a major part of Coreno’s life for the past 25 years with many contributions and success stories. “I'm very thankful for the opportunity to return to the Medina High School athletic program. Coach Spelling has done an amazing job taking this program to the next level. I plan to continue that tradition. I had a great run with the girls, but I’m 0-0 as head coach for the boys. I’ll work hard to prove my knowledge and passion for the game of soccer. I can’t wait to get started. ,” said Coreno.

Boosters Corner

The Medina Athletic Boosters work to help our student-athletes on and off the field of play, but they aren’t the only students the Boosters are helping. On Tuesday, February 22, 2022, Medina Athletic Boosters president Tom Delac, secretary Daniella Hensley, and concessions manager Autumn Giddens presented Medina High School Student Council members with a check for $20,000. This donation from the Boosters represents a portion of the proceeds from concession sales during the 2021 football season. “This is an ongoing partnership with the Boosters. Their generous support of the Student Council helps to partially fund prom and keep ticket prices to this event at an affordable cost for the students,” said Laura Calaiacovo, advisor of Student Council. Dr. Justin Brantner and the Junior Class Student Council representatives are already working hard on this year’s prom. Thanks to the most successful year in Medina's history, the Student Council and the Boosters were able to meet their goal this season.

The Boosters hosted the Positive Coaching Alliance for many of our senior and junior student-athlete leaders. In the third of this year’s four sessions, our Bees learned about Positive Initiation and the dangers of hazing. Special thanks to our sponsor of Medina’s PCA program, LLA Therapy.

Looking ahead to the spring, please send in your senior spring athlete’s pictures for the “Before They Were Bees” section for the next Athletic Program to boosters@medinabees.org. Please make sure to submit your pictures by March 18th to make sure they are in this spring’s publication.
