HES Shark Scoop

April 4, 2025
Dear HES Caregivers,
We’ve had a wonderful week here at HES! Our third graders wrapped up the ELA portion of the MCAS with focus and determination — we’re so proud of their hard work. Up next: our fourth graders are ready to take the spotlight next week!
This week also marked the start of Autism Appreciation Month at HES. This month is all about fostering understanding, promoting kindness, and celebrating the importance of inclusivity and uniqueness in our community. To keep the momentum going, we’ll be having school-wide spirit days next week — be sure to check out the flyer included in this newsletter for all the details!
Looking ahead, while we’re deeply engaged in this school year, we’re also beginning to plan for the next. I’m currently accepting Optional Caregiver Input for Placement for the 2025–2026 school year (click this link) through Wednesday, April 23rd.
Here’s a quick look at how the placement process works:
-
After reviewing any caregiver input, our teachers and specialists will thoughtfully create classroom groupings that consider gender balance, social and academic strengths, support needs, and positive peer relationships (not just close friends, but students who learn well together).
-
The administration will then assign teachers to these class groups. Please note that some teachers may be moving to different grade levels.
-
While we welcome and value your input, please understand that it is one part of a complex and careful process, and we may not be able to honor all requests.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support. Wishing you and your family a wonderful weekend — and don’t hesitate to reach out if I can support you or your child in any way.
Warmly,
Christie
Hello HES community! This year we are so excited to be presenting Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with our amazing 4th grade students. Our talented and creative Set Crew members are working hard building the sets for the 4th grade actors to shine. We are in need of some donations for the set to come together a lot easier. Anything from the list that you can contribute would help us immensely!
Thank You from our Stage Crew!

Notes from the Nurses' Office
Happy Spring from the Nurse’s office! This week has sailed by! Student’s are seeming happier and healthier these days.
Reminders:
Please continue to send in your child’s yearly health physicals. Thank you to those who have already sent them in.
If your child has had a bathroom accident and has been lent clothing from the nurse’s office, please return the items as soon as possible. We are running especially low on small pants. If you are able to put an extra pair of bottoms in your child's backpack in case of an accident that is also helpful!
Health update: There have been a few cases of RSV reported to us, mainly in the preschool classes. RSV can cause many symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion, runny nose and fever, and most often the symptoms are mild. RSV in severe cases can cause serious difficulty breathing. This is most concerning for infants/children under 5, and older adults or those that are immune compromised. As always, handwashing and cough covering are the best ways to help prevent the spread of any virus. Please reach out to your doctor if you have any questions.
Please see below for information on the Bridge Care Clinic, where children waiting to secure a primary care provider can be seen on April 10th for a health evaluation. This includes those that are in need of a sports/school physical exam. Scan the QR code to pre register.
Important Transportation Update
Starting March 31, the first phase of road work for the placement of sewers will begin on Route 39 in East Harwich. Our Transportation Coordinator is in frequent contact with the construction team in order to minimize disruptions to school bus routes. Moving forward, if there are any specific changes to bus stops or routes, our Transportation Coordinator will contact those families directly. It is recommended that anyone traveling in this area allow for extra time, as through traffic will be detoured while the road work is underway.
Substitute Cafeteria Workers Needed
Are you interested in working one or a few times a week in our cafeteria? We are in need of substitute cafeteria workers to prepare and serve food to our fabulous Sharks. The ideal hours are 8 am - 1 pm but we have some flexibility. The rate of pay is $19 / hour. Please reach out to Mac Noks at mnoks@monomoy.edu.
A great way to make some extra money and stay on your child's school day schedule. Bus drivers needed for large and small bus transportation. All training is provided by the Collaborative. For more information, please speak with Lisa Stobbart at 508-420-6950

Call the Attendance Line If Your Shark Is Absent
Per the handbook, if your child is unable to attend school, please enter the absence in PickUp Patrol and/or call our designated attendance line, 617-848-0115, as early as possible. Soon after arrival, our office staff begins to call the caregivers of absent students if we haven't already heard from them. This is important, as we want to ensure that all students are safe. Your phone message with the reason for the absence is all we need. While an email to the teacher is helpful, it sometimes doesn't make its way to the office staff. Thank you for your help!
