Welcome to our October newsletter! We're excited to share some of the great things happening here at Hanson Middle School. First, we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our recent fundraiser for the South Shore Action for Hope and the Trippy Foundation. Thanks to your generosity, we raised over $1300 to be split between these two worthy causes.
As we move into the second half of the quarter, please note that first quarter progress reports will be available online via the Infinite Campus Portal on Wednesday, November 5. The portal will be closed for viewing starting October 23. Mark your calendars for parent-teacher conferences on November 20.
We're also looking for parent volunteers to join our School Council. If you're interested in helping to create a positive learning environment, our first meeting is Wednesday, October 8, at 3:00 pm. Please contact Mrs. Laferriere in the main office if you'd like to join us.
If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Thank you,
Josh Belvis

Afterschool Enrichment:
With the Afterschool Enrichment Program beginning this week, please remember that students should be picked up by 3:55 PM if they are not taking the late bus. While the portal to sign up for transportation has closed, students may sign up for the program on a rolling admission basis throughout the school year.
Attendance:
As a reminder, please be sure to review our attendance and tardy policies. Students should be prepared for the start of the school day by 7:35 and should be in homeroom by 7:40 to avoid being marked tardy. If a bus is running late, homeroom teachers will be notified and students will not be marked tardy. Attendance at school is expected of all children on a regular basis. If your child will be absent, please call the school office prior to 10:00 A.M. at (781) 618-7375. Pursuant to Chapter 222 Acts of 2012: The school will notify parents or guardians in the event that a student has missed 5 or more school days, unexcused, in a school year requesting a meeting to develop action steps for student attendance. Absences may be excused for the following reasons: illness, bereavement or serious illness in family, weather so inclement as to endanger the health of the child, or the observance of major religious holidays.
Electronic Devices:
Students do not need access to personal electronic devices during the school day. As the policy is written, the use of electronic devices, unless allowed by teacher/administrator for educational purposes, is not permitted during the course of the school day; this includes lunch time. Students should keep phones turned off and away. Headphones should not be used unless for an educational purpose. If you need to reach your child, we ask that you refrain from texting or calling them, instead, please contact the main office and we will connect you with them.
Afternoon Pick-Up:
In front of the school, please be sure not to block the bus lane. Doing so often causes the buses to have to cross the double yellow line into oncoming traffic waiting to enter the pick-up loop. Once in the pick-up loop, be sure to leave plenty of room for school vans to park in the pick-up area and remain behind the flag pole until you are instructed to pull forward. Please do not park in front of the vans. Once vans leave, you may pull up as far as possible.
Booster Bash
Information will be coming in our November newsletter about our Booster Thon/ Booster Bash which will start the week of November 6th.

School Council & Fundraising
Are you interested in getting involved with your child’s education in another way? If you are, then think about whether you would be interested in joining the Hanson Middle School Council (also called the School Improvement Council). By law, every school is required to have a School Council. The group is made up of parents, teachers, and at least one community member.
The law outlines four major areas of responsibility for councils. School councils are to assist principals in:
- Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards;
- Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;
- Reviewing the annual school building budget; and
- Formulating a school improvement plan.
We will meet 4 times during the school year. The meeting schedule is as follows: Wednesday October 8, Wednesday December 10, Wednesday February 11, and Wednesday May 13. Each meeting is about an hour, starting at 3:00 PM, and ending around 4:00 PM. Emails will be sent prior to each meeting to inform you whether it will take place or is being cancelled and the reason for cancellation.
This year we will be doing all fundraising through our school council. If you are interested in getting involved with school fundraising please email josh.belvis@whrsd.org.

School Nurse News
When to keep your child home due to illness:
If your child has symptoms of a respiratory virus such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, they should stay home and be seen by their pediatrician as needed. If your child has a fever of 100 or higher, they need to stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without taking any fever-reducing medicine. They can return to school once symptoms are improving and they feel well enough to participate in the school day.
Gastrointestinal Illness (vomiting and/or diarrhea) - your child should stay home until 24 hours after vomiting and/or diarrhea has resolved, they are showing improvement, and they feel well enough to participate in school.
REMINDERS
ABSENCES: Please remember to call the absence sick line (781-618-7375) or the nurse directly to report your student absent and be sure to include the reason for absence. I will be following up with phone calls home as needed regarding illnesses and absences.
GRADE 7 PARENTS: If you have not done so already, please send in your child’s current physical form and immunization record so I can confirm immunization compliance per state law for all grade 7 students.
MEDICATION AT SCHOOL: All medication orders need to be renewed with the start of each school year. The Medication Authorization Form needs to be completed by the parent and prescribing doctor in order for me to accept the medicine at school. Please be sure to bring this completed form when dropping off medication to me. Some doctors may use their own order forms, but the student information and parent section of the Medication Authorization Form still needs to be completed by a parent/guardian. Medication needs to be brought in by a parent/guardian with the required forms at the beginning of each school year.
INJURIES/RESTRICTIONS: If your child has sustained an injury, we must have a note from the doctor stating the child’s physical limitations/restrictions, including a gym excuse note and order for the use of assistive devices such as crutches or a wheelchair.
Thank you and as always please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Renaissance
One of the focal points of the Renaissance Program is character development. One way the program recognizes this is with our Gold Star Spotlight. Members of our school community that display high moral character and contribute to the HMS environment in a positive way can be nominated for this award. Nominees are given a certificate, a small treat, and recognition on announcements and other public community platforms.
Renaissance aims to celebrate students and staff for academic excellence, positive character referrals, attendance, and for all around being amazing! We encourage all families to participate by emailing us positive stories about your child's teachers. Your feedback helps us to acknowledge and appreciate the exceptional educators in our community. If you have something that you would like to share, please email us at hms.renaissance@whrsd.org.
Washington, DC 2026
We have Hilliard’s Chocolate bars available for student fundraising. This fundraising is for all grade 8 students. Students staying home from the D.C. trip are still able to sell chocolate bars to reimburse the cost of their two field trips. Selling two boxes of chocolate will reimburse the cost of the two local field trips in full. Students or parents can purchase a box of candy bars from Mrs. Laferriere in the main office for $50. Each box contains 40 chocolate bars which can be sold for $2.50 each. There is a $50 profit from each box sold and you may apply the profit directly to your students account or may use it for spending money while in D.C.
