A message from Our Principal
Dear Families,
Happy October! The school year is moving quickly, and we have many exciting events and learning opportunities planned this month. Please take a moment to review the upcoming dates and activities so your family can stay connected and involved.
PTO Meeting – October 13, 4:00 p.m. (Library)
We hope you can join us for our PTO meeting! I will give a short presentation (about 5 minutes) on our Computer Programming Specialty School status. We are seeking your input on how to sustain and strengthen this unique program for our students. Your voice matters, and we’d love to hear your ideas.
Trunk or Treat – October 22, 5:00–6:00 p.m. (Front of the Building)
Bring the whole family for a fun evening of Trunk or Treat! Students are invited to wear costumes and collect treats in front of the school. It’s always a wonderful community event, and we hope to see you there.
End of First Quarter & Fall Celebrations – October 24
The end of the quarter is October 24. Classrooms will also be holding their Fall Parties on this day.
Parent–Teacher Conferences & Book Fair
· October 28: 4:00–8:00 p.m.
· October 30: 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Parent–Teacher Conferences are a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and celebrate their successes. We encourage every family to schedule a conference time.
Sign up will open October 10 at 7:00 PM: https://www.myconferencetime.com/loesshills/
The Book Fair will be open during conferences on both October 28 and 30—this is a great time to stock up on books for home reading!
Please note: Students do not have school on October 30 and 31.
Character Focus: Responsibility
Through our Character Strong curriculum, students are learning about Responsibility this month. We encourage you to reinforce this at home by talking about responsible choices, setting routines, and following through on commitments.
Thank you for your continued partnership in making our school a safe, welcoming, and engaging place for all students. We look forward to seeing you at our October events!

Important Reminders for School Meals
Loess Hills is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program which allows our school to serve breakfast and lunch at no cost to our students. Loess Hills students will not be charged for breakfast or lunch during the upcoming school year.
A complete list of CEP schools in our district can be found on our website. If you have a student attending another school that is not a CEP school, we encourage you to complete the 2025-2026 online application for free and reduced meals. This will help ensure other students in your family receive the meals they need during the upcoming school year.
For questions or assistance with school meals, please contact the District’s Food Service Department at 712-279-6860 or 712-279-6862.
Handbook Includes Updated Protocol Information
Have you reviewed the 2025-2026 SCCSD Parent/Guardian – Student Handbook? The handbook includes important information to help students reach their fullest potential at school. Families are encouraged to review the handbook with their students to make sure they are aware of what is expected of them as a student in the Sioux City Community School District.

Have a Safety Concern?
Safe + Sound Iowa offers students and families a convenient way to anonymously report safety concerns related to our school. Trained dispatchers will share the information with appropriate school administrators and/or law enforcement so help can be given to those in crisis or at risk.
Bullying and Harassment Free District
The District is committed to providing all students with a safe learning environment in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The District’s Anti-Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing policy defines bullying and harassment as well as the procedures for reporting and investigating bullying or harassment complaints.
If your student feels they are being bullied or harassed, encourage your student to visit with the student involved and tell them to stop. They should also tell a teacher, principal, or trusted adult at their school. An online discrimination, bullying, harassment, and hazing complaint form is also available on the District’s website and may be completed by the student, parent, or school employee.
Be An Advocate for Our Schools
Volunteers are needed to join the District’s Grassroots Advocacy Committee. As a volunteer, you will receive email updates about important legislative events that could impact public education and be asked to contact local and state leaders to advocate for our schools. Volunteer today and let your voice be heard! Contact Communications@live.siouxcityschools.com
to volunteer.
