Coronavirus & Home Learning Opportunities Coronavirus & Home Learning Opportunities

Students all over the globe are taking advantage of Home Learning opportunities. The goal is to keep your mind engaged and active as we take a break from being in our traditional Albert Schweitzer classrooms. Please be sure you are clicking on the elementary home learning opportunities to practice reading and math activities as well as movement and brain breaks! It's important that we keep a routine at home during this time. Set a schedule each morning and stick to it! Many parents are asking what that schedule should look like at home.

This is a picture of Ella & Brooke, my daughters doing their distance learning for their school. We try to start early and do reading, math, and writing activities each day. We are loving the online read alouds, and today we visited the San Diego Zoo! The panda cam was their favorite. And I never knew that giraffes only need 5-30 minutes of sleep each day! They even sleep standing up! So cool. We also do the live drawing lessons from Mo Willems at 1:00 pm each day.

I would recommend 1-2 hours of practice with the home learning opportunities each day with physical activities dispersed in between. Think of it in chunks. 15 minutes of math practice then take a break. 15 minutes of reading a book and retelling the story and then take a break, record a video of you explaining a cool fact you learned at the Sand Diego Zoo website and post it to Seesaw for your teacher.....then keep going! Be sure to visit our Neshaminy School District COVID-19 website daily for updates. The website offers information for picking up a technology device if needed, picking up free and reduced lunch meals for students, Bucks County and PA Department of Health Resources, a list of local food pantries, and more.

We are still staying busy with schoolwork during our time off. Staff at Albert Schweitzer held a virtual staff meeting via Microsoft TEAMS yesterday. Kindergarteners in Ms. Supowitz and Ms. McHugh's class also held a virtual class meeting via ZOOM! Administrators have had continuous meetings to communicate with each other and plan next steps through TEAMS and ZOOM. The learning and growing continues. Thank you to students, families, and staff for their dedication as we work through this time.

'Read Across America' School Meeting 'Read Across America' School Meeting

We enjoyed a fun-filled School Meeting learning more about Dr. Seuss and the love of reading on Monday, March 2nd. Thank you to Ms. Maurizi and Ms. d'Entremont for engaging the audience and keeping our love for reading and books alive! The school listened to a read aloud video by a staff of the book The Cat in the Hat and competed in a Nearpod Quiz by class to test their knowledge of Dr. Seuss characters and stories. So much fun!

We were so thrilled to have author/illustrator Deborah Deeken at Albert Schweitzer the week of March 2nd in celebration of Read Across America. She met with each grade level in our library and talked about how she became an author, examples of her writing during the phases of writing her books, and how to become a published author ourselves. Thank you to our PTO for sponsoring her visit!

Square 1 Art Orders Due Square 1 Art Orders Due

In art class, students created work of art for the Square 1 Art Fundraiser with the PTO. This fundraiser allows you to purchase keepsakes with your child’s artwork printed on them. Due to the school closure, we have made some changes to the ordering process for the fundraiser. You can still order keepsakes with your child’s artwork printed on them, but they will be sent to your home rather then the school. Just follow the link in the flyer below and search for your child’s artwork by entering the state, school name, and your child’s name. We have free stickers with each child’s artwork printed on them, and we hope to be back in school soon so we can give them out. If you have questions, please feel free to email Mrs. Todd at ttodd@neshaminy.org.

Thanks,

Mrs. Tod
