Principal's Message
Newsletter Week 7 Term 1 2026
Kia ora tātou.
I am presently in Sydney. The Hamilton Diocese principals are at MacKillop Place for a Retreat which started over the weekend. Tomorrow we are visiting a school where our Minister of Education will also be visiting, along with a small delegation of principals from across New Zealand. The focus is on Structured Maths, and on Saturday, we are attending a New South Wales Conference on Structured Maths. I am looking forward to the new learning.
Our swimming sports were a huge success last Wednesday. There has been great positive feedback from students and parents who attended. We are so lucky to have so many parents who are willing to help on the day. Thank you to you all.
We have our St Joseph’s Mass at 9.00 am on Friday. You are most welcome to attend.
A Teacher Only Day is scheduled for Monday, 20th April, which is the first Monday of Term 2. We are joining many schools from the Bay of Plenty to hear Professor Lorraine Hammond speak on the Science of Learning.
Have a great week
David

UNIFORM SHOP
We need you! If you have time to spare half hour before school on a Monday/Friday 8.30-9am or Wednesday 2.30-3pm, we would love to have you volunteer in our uniform shop. All training would be given and if we get enough helpers we can alternate week to week. Please contact the office if you are able to help.
Director of Religious Studies
On Friday, we will celebrate the Feast of Saint Joseph with a whole school Mass at 9:00 a.m. You are warmly invited to join us for this special celebration.
Pope Leo XIV reminds us that St Joseph teaches us how caring for others means being truly present for them. Joseph lovingly protected and cared for the Holy Family, showing deep responsibility and love. The Pope also describes Joseph as a model of hospitality because he welcomed and safeguarded the family God entrusted to him.
Although Joseph never speaks in the Gospel, his actions show great faith, trust, and commitment to doing what God asked of him. Pope Leo XIV encourages us to look to St Joseph as an example and asks him to watch over all those who are working to build communities filled with kindness, goodness, and friendship.
Like St Joseph, we are called to care for others, support our families and friends, and show patience and kindness in our daily lives.
We have several teachers who will be attending the Josephite Colloquium next term. This two-day residential experience is offered to people who work and minister in the Josephite tradition, including schools with a Josephite charism.
I hope you have a blessed week.
God bless.

GALA 2026
The Parents, Teacher Association of St Marys School Rotorua, would like to acknowledge all the efforts and hard work that went into making the 2026 Gala, our best gala ever.
The smiling faces on all who attended was testament enough that people were enjoying the event. And its always encouraging to hear such positive feedback in our community. Your PTA are a small and very dedicated team of people with big hearts and a passion for our tamariki, along with our very committed supporters.
A massive shout out to all the volunteers, the donations, the set up and clean-up crew, the helpers on the day and everything that went on before and after the big event. And everyone who came and enjoyed themselves. Thank you.
Our next meeting is Wednesday the 18th of March 2026, 7pm in the staffroom. Everyone is welcome to attend.

BNZ KIWI HOOPS
You may have heard about our BNZ Kiwi Hoops – Hoops & Dreams Tours. I just wanted to extend the offer to get some tamariki that are new to basketball or exploring the sport in your community to the event in Tauranga. We can cover the full cost of travel.
Activity
Each session is packed with skills, drills, games, music, prizes, and special appearances from pro players, all in a safe and supportive environment. Accessible and inclusive for everyone!
Purpose
To attract new players to basketball, but what we have found is it might take a kid that already loves the game to invite 3 friends that don’t normally play. So, you could ask your players within the age group that are engaged to do this or invite a school team that’s still exploring. What we don’t want to see is a staked team full of rep players.
This is a fun, welcoming way to try the game!
Details below:
The BNZ Kiwi Hoops – Hoops & Dreams Tour is coming to Aotearoa! Free, fun basketball events for tamariki aged 8–13 with no experience needed. There will be skills, drills, games, music, prizes, and special appearances from pro players, all in a supportive environment where everyone belongs.
