Happy Spring Break everyone! I hope you all get to rest, relax, and renew yourselves for a fresh outlook on the rest of the school year.
For the week after Spring Break, students will begin a new unit focused on informational text. We will introduce the key themes of the unit while practicing important reading strategies, including using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Students will also work on identifying central ideas and analyzing how specific details and paragraphs help develop an author’s ideas. Throughout the week, they will practice expressing their understanding through both discussion and writing.
We will conclude the week with a vocabulary quiz on Friday. The vocabulary words are pasted below in case you and your scholar would like to get a jump on studying over break:
- Abundance: a very large amount of something
- Conservation: the protection of animals, plants, and forests from human activity
- Debris: broken or torn pieces of something larger
- Habitat: the natural home of a plant or animal
- Legislate: to make a law
- Marine: relating to the sea or the creatures that live there
- Populate: to fill an area with living creatures or beings
- Sustain: to keep something going for a long time
As always, please ensure your scholar is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. Regular independent reading is one of the best ways to strengthen comprehension, build vocabulary, and reinforce the skills students need to be successful on the ELA CAPE.
Math with Mx. Gomez
Happy Spring Break, everyone!
I hope you all take this time to rest, reset, and come back refreshed for our final stretch before DC CAPE.
Before you fully unplug, please make sure all Amplify statistics lessons assigned while I’ve been chaperoning the world language trip are completed. These lessons were due today, 4/10, at 3:15 PM, and they count for a grade. I’ll be finalizing grading once I’m back in the States, so it’s important that everything is submitted and up to date.
Please take a moment to double‑check your work so we don’t roll into the week before DC CAPE with late assignments adding unnecessary stress.
I’m excited to see you all back—recharged, focused, and ready to hit the ground running. As a heads up, during DC CAPE you’ll be completing a statistics project and presenting your findings that same week, so being caught up now will make that process much smoother.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
As we head into the break, please remind your students to return ready to learn—with their best sense and their best manners.
I will be accompanying the 8th Grade World Language trip to Costa Rica. During my absence, students will be working on an Economics packet. Each day, they will complete a new reading and corresponding section of the packet. If work is not finished during class, the readings will be posted daily on Canvas so students can complete their assignments at home.
It is very important that students bring their packets to class every day.
Please also help reinforce our classroom expectations while I am away:
- No gum, candy, or food. Water only.
- Stay engaged and on task
- Use kind and respectful language
Thank you for your support in helping maintain a positive and productive classroom environment.
Enjoy the break!

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello scientists!
We made it to spring break - woohoo! I hope you have lovely weather wherever you are next week. This past week was all about weather. Students enjoyed presenting their weather forecast presentations and finished the week showing their knowledge of how sea and land breezes work.
After spring break, students will begin to study for their Weather and Water summative scheduled for Thursday, April 23rd. The Weather and Water review blookets are posted in Canvas and they will received their study guide after spring break.
Land and Sea Breezes
Many of you may be near a large body of water like the ocean over the next week. The next time you feel a nice cool breeze coming from the water, ask your student how density plays a role in creating breezes at the beach!
Roots!
Roots Quiz 4.2 will take place on Friday, April 24th. The roots for quiz 4.2 are:
- Anthropo = human (think anthropogenic, anthropology)
- Insula = island (think insulate, peninsula)
- Auto = self (think automatic, autobiography)
- Toxic = poison (think toxin, toxicity)
- Biblio = book (think bibliography, bibliophile, bible)
Keepers: mono, dia, fract
