Middle School Student Council is excited to announce the launch of its latest service project, the February Canned Food Drive! Here's what you need to know:

  • Each grade level at GSA Middle is competing to see who can donate the most ounces of canned goods.
  • Cans must be in good condition and not expired to be counted.
  • Social Studies teachers’ classrooms will serve as the drop-off locations for each grade.
  • The grade that donates the most canned goods by the end of February wins a donut party provided by admin during an advisory period in March!
  • All canned goods will be donated to a local food pantry in March.

Keeping Communication Open with Your Middle Schooler

As middle schoolers grow, they start seeking more independence, which can make communication with parents a little tricky. While they may not always seem eager to talk, they still need guidance and support. Here are some tips to keep the conversation flowing:

Pick the Right Moments – Kids open up more when they feel comfortable, like during car rides, bedtime, or while doing an activity together. Avoid forcing serious talks on the spot.

Listen More, Lecture Less – Instead of jumping in with advice, try listening first. Asking open-ended questions like, “How did that make you feel?” can encourage deeper conversations.

Watch for Nonverbal Cues – Your child may not always say what they’re feeling, but their body language speaks volumes. Maintain eye contact, nod, and show interest to build trust.

Balance Tech and Talk – Many middle schoolers prefer texting over face-to-face conversations, which can make real-world communication harder. Encouraging screen-free family discussions can help improve their social skills.

Even when your middle schooler seems distant, they still need you! Keeping communication open now builds a foundation for strong relationships in the future.
