WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE DEN
Let's Talk AI!
Students had the opportunity to take part in an engaging campus tour, where they explored Central Connecticut State University’s innovative AI corridor and learned about the wide range of courses connected to emerging technology. They also gained insight into the university’s Esports programming, including opportunities for competition, teamwork, and career pathways in the growing gaming industry.
In addition to the tour, students participated in an information session highlighting the health and nursing programs offered at CCSU. This experience gave them a deeper understanding of potential college majors and career paths, while helping them envision their future beyond high school.
Seed Dispersal in Bio
In the 10th grade Biology Class, students explored how plants survive in different environments by investigating seed dispersal and germination in urban vs. non-urban areas. They analyzed how factors like wind, space, and surface type impact seed's ability to grow.
Students then took on a hands-on design challenge creating their own seeds built to thrive in urban environments. Using their understanding of adaptation and natural selection, they engineered seeds with features that would improve dispersal and increase chances of survival.
This engaging project helped students connect classroom learning to the real world, showing how organisms adapt to changing environments even in the middle of a city.
Algebra in Action!
Our students have been diving into the world of poly & tri-nomials in Algebra class—starting with learning what a poly and tri-nomials are and how they are used in math! From there, they’ve been practicing how to add and subtract and simplify expressions, building strong problem-solving skills along the way.
It’s been exciting to see their confidence grow as they break down complex problems and find solutions step by step. Keep up the great work, mathematicians!
Bravo to our Drama Club!
A huge round of applause to our talented Drama Club students for their incredible performance of Game of Tiara! Their hard work, dedication, and countless hours of rehearsal truly shined on stage. From the acting to the production, every detail reflected their commitment and passion for the arts.
We are so proud of all they’ve accomplished—congratulations on a fantastic show!
A special thank you and congratulations to Mrs. Podeswa for her guidance, support, and for helping bring this amazing production to life.
April RECAP!
IB LEARNER
For the months of May and June, we focus on the last two IB learner profile traits:
Caring & Communicator
MAY- Caring
In May, we celebrate and encourage acts of caring, since this month’s IB learner profile trait is caring. As caring learners, we “show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.”
To encourage more caring in our students, we can try the following at home:
Encourage your student to explain their own feelings, and to imagine how others might feel, in challenging situations.
Ask your student how they made someone’s day better, and share how you have done the same!
Highlight when you see acts of kindness in your daily experiences, on shows, or in what you read, and talk about them with your student.
June - Communicator
This month, International’s featured IB Learner Profile trait is Communicator. As communicators, we express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
How can you encourage effective communication outside of school? Here are a few ideas!
In conversations with your student:
practice both speaking and active listening
ask “why?” and “why do you think that?”
Encourage them to be as clear and as thorough as they can be in their assignments
Point out the power of language when you see or hear it (in the news, TV shows/movies, books, etc)
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
This summer, our LEAP Team will be reaching out to families of students who had over 10% absences during the 2025–2026 school year. These calls are not about penalties—they are about partnership. Our goal is to connect, listen, and work together to create a plan that supports stronger attendance in the upcoming school year.
Consistent attendance plays a major role in student success, both academically and socially. When students are present, they are better able to build relationships with their teachers, stay engaged in their learning, and feel connected to their school community.
We believe that strong relationships between staff, students, and families are the foundation of that success. By opening communication and working together, we can better understand challenges, provide support, and ensure every student feels seen, supported, and set up to thrive.
We look forward to partnering with our families to make next year even stronger.
If you need support and resources during the summer, please contact Ms. Gibson at sgibson@crec.org
