Gearing Up For A New District Strategic Plan Gearing Up For A New District Strategic Plan

Strategic Plan Survey for PK-12 Parents & Guardians: Hoboken Public Schools

Dear Parents & Guardians,

The Hoboken Public School District is embarking on a comprehensive journey to develop a new 5-year strategic plan, a guiding document that will direct all district actions and decisions in the coming years. Central to this process is the revision of the district's vision and mission statements, along with the establishment of strategic goals. Two of these goals will be particularly significant: one anchored in The Portrait of a Hoboken High School Graduate, which will define the skills and attributes our students should possess upon graduation, and the other in the district’s Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP), which will ensure that our educational facilities support these aspirations.

I am currently working with our district's Architect, Facilities Director, and Facilities Committee of the Board of Education to update our Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP). I am also engaging with students around the topic of The Portrait of a Hoboken High School Graduate and will begin to engage our faculty in this overall process as well. In the upcoming days, I will post a community survey.

As a key school district stakeholder, your input is extremely valuable to the 5-year Strategic Planning Process as well. This specific survey is designed specifically for families of students in our PK-12 program. It contains a range of different types of questions. Some questions are required and some are not required. You will notice that the vast majority of open-ended questions are not required. This gives you the opportunity to answer those that you want to provide input and those you do not feel it is necessary. The multiple choice, check box, and star questions are required. Depending on the number of open-ended questions you choose to complete, this survey can take anywhere from 15-30 minutes to complete.

While it is time out of your busy schedule, it is so very important to us. I urge you to help us with this process by completing and submitting one survey by Friday, December 13th.

E-mails will not be collected with this survey, ensuring that your responses are kept anonymous and confidential. Thank you for choosing to participate in this survey to help our district as we envision the future of the Hoboken Public School District.

Sincerely,

Christine Johnson, D.Litt.

Superintendent of Schools

2nd Grade at Brandt School

Second graders are finishing strong before Thanksgiving break!

In Literacy, students are exploring the theme "What can animals in stories teach us?" by reading and analyzing fables. They’ll compare and contrast the texts using graphic organizers and writing paragraphs. In Phonics, they’re focusing on the soft c and g sounds with daily warm-ups and activities. Writing skills are also being strengthened through weekly paragraph writing and district tasks.

In Math, students are practicing word problems and building fluency with addition and subtraction. They’ve even created their own word problems, applying addition and subtraction to reach the same solution. Daily warm-ups, games, and Math Stations help reinforce automaticity in solving equations.

AP African American Studies at Hoboken HS with Mr. Munoz

Mr. Munoz's AP African American Studies class is currently studying Unit 2: Freedom, Enslavement, and Resistance (16th century–1865), with a focus on Topic 2.20: Abolitionism and the Underground Railroad. Students are learning about the Underground Railroad, a covert network that helped enslaved people escape to freedom in the North and Canada, and the courageous individuals who risked their lives to help them.

Central to this topic is Harriet Tubman, who led around 300 enslaved people to freedom and later served as a Union spy and nurse during the Civil War. Students are also studying other key figures like William Still, known as the "Father of the Underground Railroad," and Levi Coffin, who helped operate safe houses. Important locations, including Philadelphia and the border states, are also highlighted.

This week, we were honored to host Superintendent Johnson, Principal Piccapietra, and NJDOE Project Specialist Makenzie Kelly, who visited the class to observe our discussion. Their visit underscores the importance of understanding the historical struggle for freedom and justice.

As students continue to explore these topics, they are gaining valuable insights into the legacy of resistance and the ongoing fight for equality.

In Room 102, students have had a blast exploring pumpkins! They studied their shape, size, growing conditions, and uses for food, decoration, and science. After decorating pumpkins they picked from the patch, the class created a "pum-cano," combining math and science.

Students measured ingredients and watched in delight as their pumpkin volcano erupted with lava. It was a fun, hands-on lesson in science!

In classroom 304 students learned about the letter N. For graphics practice they worked on writing the capital and lowercase N. In art centers, students drew pictures of things that began with the letter N.

The class even had show and tell where they shared something that began with the letter N.

Students enjoyed Graphic Practice, drawing circles for lollipops or balloons and adding lines for sticks or strings after the music stopped. This activity connects to shapes, facial features, body parts, and letters like O, o, I, i, and the number 1.

A story about a candy or party store sparked creativity, while guided phrases like "around, close" and "down" helped develop fine motor skills.

Brandt ECE

The holidays are in full swing at Brandt! Students had fun making Thankful Turkeys using their handprints as the base and adding feathers. They shared what they're thankful for, including family, friends, toys, and yummy food.

The class is excited for next week's "Turkey in Disguise" activity and looks forward to showing off their turkeys.

Brandt Preschool

This week in Ms. Nicole’s Preschool class, students prepared for Thanksgiving by graphing their favorite foods and discussing class favorites and least favorites.

During circle time, they helped their turkey run the turkey trot to earn bubbles and practiced turkey-themed gross motor movements. In centers, students played with people figures and talked about who they'd see at their Thanksgiving celebrations.
