SDUSD Walker Elementary School Wins Top Prize in STEAM category at iVIE Film Festival
Walker Elementary School won best elementary STEAM video in the 22nd Annual iVIE Awards and Student Film Festival.
The winners were announced at the Reading Cinemas Town Square in Clairemont on Saturday, June 3. The Authors, Illustrators, and Journalists (AIJ) Academy/Club students at Walker Elementary School created a STEAM Science video, INVENTIONS AND INNOVATIONS, which included an interview with Inventor Cassidy Matwiyoff and Principal Regina Serbin. It also features the school’s Science Night and several students sharing their ideas for inventions. The video was inspired by the book, LION LIGHTS, by Shelly Pollock and Richard Turere, whose invention helped save African wildlife. San Diego Unified School District’s science department provided its FOSS Science Kit to help students better understand about electricity/inventions/physical science using batteries, wires, motor, and light bulbs. Grace Nall, AIJ Advisor and Walker Elementary School teacher, and her AIJ students created the video during after school for several months.
Since 2001, the iVIE Film Festival has grown into a major San Diego County-wide student video competition for Grades K-12. Annually, there are more than 500 video submissions from 120 teachers, 73 schools, 23 districts, private schools, involving 3,500 students. Submitted videos are judged by media professionals and educators curated by Media Arts Center, San Diego. The categories include documentaries, short narrative, Public Service Announcements (PSA), STEAM, News Story, Diversity and Inclusion, “Do It Yourself,” and “All the Reasons to #LOVE ELECTRIC.” The Media Arts Center San Diego has continued to bring the iVIE Film Festival where students can get creative and explore their talents. San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG & E) is among the sponsors for the event.
In addition to the iVIE Film Festival, the AIJ Academy students at Walker Elementary School entered both the “Inventions and Innovations” video and another AIJ’s video, “News Story: Inspiring Inventions Helping Animals and People” in the 57th Annual California Media Festival. Both videos placed as Top 3 Finalists. The categories were for “Elementary Non-Fiction” and “Elementary Aesthetic Non Fiction.”

Girls Who Code - Free Computer Science Programming
Our evidence-based curriculum is one of the best ways to connect kids with real-world computer science applications – just look at our recent Spring 2023 GWC Challenge results.
Of the 141 submissions we received exploring how Artificial Intelligence can be used for good, over 100 came from Club members, and winners received a $250 Amazon Gift Card and Girls Who Code swag.
This summer, help young people get a head start on our next GWC Challenge. Start a free Club in your community and give kids a leg up in computer science learning and achievement.
Free Humane Science Education Resources for 2023-2024
PETA TeachKind Science has launched a state-of-the-art science education pilot program to teach students dissection using more effective, ethical, and economical non-animal training methods, such as interactive computer software programs and hands-on, realistic simulation models like SynFrog. Our pilot program is designed to incorporate modern teaching tools that are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and offered free to qualifying schools—and to gauge teacher and student satisfaction. Through our pilot program, we donate these resources to schools nationwide. For more information or to submit an application to participate in the free pilot program, please visit PETA TeachKind or contact Morgan Apperson at morgana@peta.org. Thank you
