CLASS NEWS CLASS NEWS

Hello Tiger Families,

We’ve had another wonderful week, and we can hardly believe how quickly time is flying! Thank you so much for your continued support. We are incredibly proud of our 4th grade Tigers and the wonderful way they are adjusting to 4th grade.

Looking ahead, Tuesday is International Dot Day! This fun celebration encourages creativity and self-expression through dot-themed activities. Students are welcome to wear dot-inspired outfits, as long as they are school-appropriate and fit the theme. We can’t wait to see everyone’s creativity shine!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Warmly,
The Fourth Grade Team

Home Support (repeated):

Any way you can help support our learning is greatly appreciated. Here are some ideas to support this weeks learning objectives:

1. Use Real-Life Numbers (Comparing and Ordering Numbers)

  • Ideas: Prices, temperatures, sports scores, time, measurements

  • Activity: Ask your child:

    • "Which item costs more?"

    • "Order these 3 temperatures from coldest to warmest."

2. Rounding in Real Life - Use prices at the store:

  • This costs $7.89, what is it rounded to the nearest dollar?”
  • “The temperature is 73°F. What’s that rounded to the nearest 10?”

English Language Arts & Reading

Focus for Next Week:

In writing, we will conclude our sentence structure unit by taking a quiz on subjects, predicates, fragments, and run-ons on Thursday, September 10. We will also briefly review the four types of sentences. In reading, we will learn to respond to a passage by providing text evidence. In word study, we will build knowledge of vowel teams and use it to spell words with vowel teams correctly.

Learning Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Spell words with prefixes, suffixes, and vowel teams correctly.

  • Analyze a sentence to determine its type (declamatory, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory).

  • Write a response to a passage using the RACE method: restate the question, answer the question, cite text evidence, and explain how the text evidence supports the answer.

Home Support:

On Tuesday, September 8, students will bring home a letter explaining how to complete reading logs and spelling homework for your reference. We will also go over the letter in class.

Students can prepare for the sentence structure quiz by mastering IXL skills covering subjects, predicates, fragments, and run-ons (see starred IXL skills).

At home, you can support your child’s vocabulary knowledge by hunting for words with prefixes and suffixes (such as re-, -er, -ing). Students can search through a favorite book or any other text to find these words. Have your student explain how the prefixes and suffixes change the meaning of the word.

Science

What is Happening in Science/STEM?

This week in science students will continue learning about Forces and Motion. Students were able to observe the transfer of energy before their very eyes while dropping two balls at the same time. Students completed the week with a Crash Course Lab that modeled the transfer of energy of a penny to the tape. This week students will focus on academic language where they will define the word and illustrate the meaning. They will complete the week in reading an informational text that uses their academic words, then learn to read a graphic organizer that models energy, speed, collision and transfer of energy through pictures and symbols.

Academic Language We Are Using This Week

energy, force, speed, collision, collide, transfer
