David's view: Saying Goodbye and Hello to the Seasons David's view: Saying Goodbye and Hello to the Seasons

We held our final day of practices for this year this past week. Age Group Champs is done as is NCSA's for our senior swimmers (see the amazing results below). Our Eastern Zones qualifiers will finish out their season next week.

As coaches, now is one of the hardest times of the swim season – is the moment we pause to look back at the past year (or years), celebrate successes and the kids who have graduated out of the program. We ponder how we can do better next time as well as begin to renew ourselves for the next season. We are filled with the what if’s and a wave of exhaustion that we are finally allowed to acknowledge is there, wondering if we can in fact refill our wells for the next season.

This year we have the joy and wonder of the Olympics as our last hurrah. I hope this first week of competition has been as inspiring to you as they are to me. Watching these athletes reach for the stars amongst the best in the world is always filled with highs of the medal stand and the lows of missing it by a hundredth. But their efforts remind us of the important work that is yet to come as we prepare for next time (the season, swim practice and the meets that will come).

Especially this year with our NOVA teammate Charlie Swanson competing at the games, the Olympics reminds me of the opportunity presented when the “next time” arrives and the excitement of what it might bring. Even more I ponder, who’s next to dream the big dream and put in the work to make it happen? Do we have someone who will dare in our midst? I sure hope so!

NOVA Family – thank you for all you do to support us, the NOVA staff – enjoy your time away and know that we will be here ready to support your swimmer in realizing their dreams when the next season begins!

122 of NOVA’s top 14 and younger athletes set off for Christiansburg last weekend and took home a big win, outscoring our nearest competitor by over 250%. NOVA hit a big milestone this past weekend. It was the 25th year in a row of winning both Short Course and Long Course Age Group champs, and we celebrated with a win in a decisive and fun way!

Let’s start with relays: NOVA won 23 out of 26 relays, with the other 3 all grabbing second. 9 relay events also nabbed double-wins with Nova 1-2 finishes!

Nova swimmers rewrote a massive section of the all-time top ten lists (feel free to peruse to learn a little Nova history!), won 4 out of 6 high point awards, set 6 team records, and even topped Virginia Swimming’s State Records 3 times!

  • Lane Francis- 50 Free

  • 13-14 girls 200 Medley Relay (Lane Francis, Savannah Harris, Maddie Bynum, Mia Eubank)

  • 11-12 Boys 400 Free Relay (Jack Danahy, Nate Doran, Kellan Clipp, and Daniel Bunge)

21 of NOVA’s senior swimmers took Indianapolis by storm at NCSAs last week. The swimmers finished Senior Champs Sunday evening and headed to the airport Monday morning for 5 more days of prelim/finals swimming, racing swimmers from all over the country. These swimmers raced tough throughout the whole meet digging deep on Sunday finishing up 9 days of amazing swimming.

NOVA’s 15 and over swimmers were also very fast this season… historically fast in fact! The 2024 LCM season now owns more LCM top 10s (15-16s top 10s + 17-18s top 10s) than any other year in our Senior programs history.

2024 = 56 top 10 swims

2023 = 43

2022 = 37

2021 = 43

2020 = 14

2015 (next closest) = 41

Congratulations to all swimmers and coaches for an outstanding meet and season!

-Coach Matt
