Dear D57 Families,

This fall, I communicated our procedures for determining severe weather closures.

D57 Families were surveyed in late fall about their preference for handling emergency day closures this school year. The survey asked if families preferred to: 1) implement remote learning on emergency day closures, 2). take days off of school (which would require that day(s) be added to the school calendar), or 3). use a combination of these two options.

We had a survey response rate of 71%. Below you will find the results of the survey along with the original survey questions.

Results of the D57 Parent/Guardian Survey

Summary

Of the respondents, 65.2% preferred the first 2 emergency days to be snow days, which would require these days to be made up at the end of the school year. Should the District need to close schools for any additional days beyond 2 snow days, 58% of the respondents preferred the use of e-learning days, which would not require days to be made up at the end of the school year.

Next Steps

Based on the survey results, the plan will be to use snow days for the first two emergency closing days, if needed. (Last year, we didn’t have any.) If we use the first two days and have a need for additional school closure days, we will likely use e-learning days. Please take a moment to review the 23-24 E-Learning Plan, which includes the alternative schedule for an E-Learning day as well as procedures for attendance and accessing Zoom.

It’s a priority in the district to consider family preferences when making scheduling decisions, if possible. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey and review these results. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

In the spirit of education,

Dr. Mary Gorr, Superintendent
