Principal's Message Principal's Message

Dear Webster Community,

The end-of-the-year mad dash continues, but it was a wonderful week to celebrate all of the incredible people that make Webster such an amazing place to be.

🌟 Special Moments Spotlight

💛 Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week: What an incredible week of love and gratitude! Thank you to our entire community for showering the staff with kindness, treats, and appreciation. Special thanks to Vicky Farrell for organizing daily delights—from crepes and dumplings to churros, smoothies, and massages—Webster staff felt the love and it showed in every smile!

🏆 Excellence in Education: Congratulations to Ms. Juanae Johnson, this year’s recipient of the Optimist Club of Malibu Ronald E. Merriman Excellence in Education Award! Juanae was honored for her extraordinary leadership, passion, and commitment to her students.

📚 Stagecoach Inn Museum Field Trip: Our 3rd graders had a fantastic visit to the Stagecoach Inn Museum in Newbury Park, perfectly timed with our California Indian unit. Students explored Chumash artifacts, stepped inside a reconstructed "ap," and walked the nature trail past a 250-year-old sycamore. Check out the Weekly Spotlight for great photos from the trip!

🌍 A Note from Botswana: This week we received a heartfelt message from Principal Mathupi sharing that the school supply donations and Starlink internet our community helped send have officially arrived! Thank you to Brooks Kamanakao for ensuring the delivery. We’re excited to continue our cross-cultural exchange and proud of the positive global impact our students are making.

📊 SPSA Board Presentation: I had the honor of co-presenting Webster’s 2026–2027 Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) at this week’s SMMUSD Board of Education meeting alongside Instructional Coach Maribeth Majewski and district leaders. The plan outlines our priorities to support academic achievement, equity, and school climate.

📝 You can read more about each of these highlights in the detailed sections below!

As we gear up for the final week of CAASPP testing, let’s finish strong!

  • 3rd graders are wrapping up Math this week
  • 4th graders are moving on to Math after completing their ELA exams
  • 5th graders have officially completed CAASPP, CAST, and Physical Fitness testing—hooray!

Attendance remains especially important during this final stretch. Please continue to ensure your child gets plenty of rest, eats a healthy breakfast, and comes to school feeling calm and confident. We believe in them and know they will shine!

If you have an incoming student for the 2026–27 school year, be sure their enrollment is complete to secure their spot. For families outside of SMMUSD, the Interdistrict Permit window opened yesterday on May 15. Help us spread the word—Webster is a wonderful place to grow and learn, and we’d love to welcome more families into our community.

📣 IMPORTANT NOTE: I’ll be off campus all next week helping lead our 5th grade Yosemite trip — where the Wi-Fi is weak but the wonder is strong! Thank you in advance for your patience, as I may be slower to respond while I’m fully present for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure with our students. The mountains are calling…and we must go!

We've got a new champ! Congratulations to Ms. Papale's TK class for taking the Webster Wear title this week 🐳💙

We were overjoyed to celebrate Ms. Juanae Johnson, this year’s recipient of the Optimist Club of Malibu Ronald E. Merriman Excellence in Education Award! Presented by SMMUSD Board Member Stacy Rouse, this honor recognizes educators who represent the very best of their profession—and Juanae exemplifies that in every way.

From the joy, music, and humor she infuses into her classroom, to the courage and compassion she brings to her leadership, Juanae's impact on the Webster community is profound. A proud SAMOHI graduate now giving back to the very district that raised her, Juanae has shaped her classroom into a space where students feel confident, cared for, and inspired to grow.

Whether reminding students to “figure it out, friend” or guiding Student Leadership through spirit weeks and campuswide events, Juanae teaches with heart and boldness. She fosters independence, collaboration, and resilience, always believing deeply in what her students are capable of achieving.

We were thrilled to celebrate this special moment with her beautiful mother by her side. Along with her honorary plaque, Juanae received a gift certificate to Geoffrey’s Malibu—because excellence deserves to be celebrated in style.

Juanae, thank you for being a shining example of what it means to lead with authenticity, grace, and joy. Webster is lucky to call you ours 💙🐳

We are thrilled to welcome Lizbeth Rios—but you can call her Liz—as a new Paraeducator supporting classrooms around campus!

Liz brings five years of experience working in school districts, primarily in Special Education, and is passionate about supporting students in all areas of their learning. Originally from outside the area, Liz recently moved to Calabasas with her husband and is excited to be part of a new school community. When she’s not on campus, she enjoys caring for her indoor plants, crocheting, and exploring the outdoors on hikes.

Liz, we’re so happy to have you here and can’t wait for our Whales to get to know you. Please join us in giving Liz a warm Webster Whale welcome when you see her on campus 🐳

Special shout out to Vicky Farrell for organizing a globe-trotting week of delicious treats that truly fed our hearts and bellies—because if there’s one thing we’ve learned, the way to Webster’s staff’s heart is through food!

This week, we received a heartfelt message from Principal Mathupi in Botswana, expressing deep gratitude for the school supplies and Starlink internet our Webster students and families helped collect and send earlier this year:

“The parents, learners and teachers really appreciate the good work that you do for our school… Your donations will motivate the teachers and learners to work hard to improve their academic performance.” – Mr. Mathupi

Thanks to the generosity of our community—and a very special thanks to Brooks Kamanakao for personally bringing the supplies across the globe—these resources are already making a powerful impact for students and teachers alike. We can’t wait to continue this meaningful global exchange and friendship with our partner school in Botswana! 🌍📚💙

🚨 TRIP REMINDERS

  • NatureBridge Agreement: You will be contacted to pick up your child in Yosemite if they experience a persistent fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a positive COVID test, or a behavior violation requiring dismissal.
  • No Electronics Policy: Cell phones, smartwatches, and gaming devices are not allowed per Webster and district policy. Students are encouraged to unplug and stay present.
  • Daily Updates: Chaperones or school staff will email and text families daily with a recap and photos of the day’s activities.
  • Departure: Arrive at Webster by 7:00 AM on Monday, May 18 to ensure an on-time departure.
  • Lunch: Pack your child a disposable lunch (everything should be able to be thrown away after eating), along with water and/or juice. Chaperones should also bring their own lunch.

  • Bus Entertainment: You may send a labeled G- or PG-rated DVD for the ride.

🎒 Packing & Preparation

  • Packing List: Make sure your child has all essentials, including a sleeping bag, sturdy hiking shoes, bandanas, and layers for cool mountain temps. View the full Yosemite Packing List HERE.

  • Break in Shoes: To avoid discomfort, students should wear their hiking shoes ahead of time.

📝 Webster’s 2026–27 SPSA 📝 Webster’s 2026–27 SPSA

This week, we were proud to share our Webster’s Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for the 2026–2027 school year with the SMMUSD Board of Education at a special presentation. This plan outlines our key priorities to support academic growth, equity, student well-being, and a positive school climate for every student. A huge thank you to our phenomenal Instructional Coach, Maribeth Majewski, who co-presented alongside Principal Diana and brought incredible leadership, insight, and heart to the work.

🔎 The 2026–2027 SPSA includes three focus areas:

  1. Academic Achievement: Increase student proficiency in ELA, Math, and Science through new curriculum adoption, academic interventions, and expanded project-based learning.
  2. Equity and Student Support: Accelerate progress for Multilingual Learners and strengthen targeted supports to close opportunity gaps.
  3. School Climate and Engagement: Foster student connectedness, boost engagement, and reduce chronic absenteeism through SEL, outdoor learning, and leadership opportunities.

🎉 Webster Playground Project! 🎉 Webster Playground Project!

With incredible support from SMMUSD, our Webster PTA (led by Lauren Franks Ifft) have spent months working with designers and contractors to propose an inspiring, modern play structure to replace our aging 20-year-old equipment. The new design prioritizes safety, accessibility, and active play—giving our students a space that fosters physical development, creativity, and social connection.

The District, in collaboration with Principal Diana, has been advancing plans for the replacement of the current playground equipment and surfacing. The proposal includes ADA upgrades as required by the Division of the State Architect (DSA). Here’s what’s coming up:

  • At the May 7, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will be asked to approve the agreement with Huckabee for design and engineering services.
  • At the May 19, 2026 Board Meeting, the Board will vote on the purchase of new equipment from Dave Bang Associates, Inc. for an amount not to exceed $157,268.10, using the CMAS contract—saving time and cost by avoiding contractor markups.

The demolition, site preparation, equipment installation, and new play surface will be bid through a separate process while we seek DSA approval. Construction is expected to begin August 2026, with completion anticipated by September 30, 2026, followed by a brief closeout period. Final approval from DSA is anticipated in late July or early August.

Below are a few renderings of the new structure—thank you to everyone working hard to bring this dream to life!

📚 New Math Curriculum Adoption UPDATE 📚 New Math Curriculum Adoption UPDATE

At the April 23 Board of Education meeting, SMMUSD’s Educational Services team, alongside teachers and students, presented the recommendation for new math curricula to be implemented districtwide beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

This recommendation is the result of an extensive pilot process led by a dedicated committee of math teachers representing every school site and grade level. Using tools from the California Department of Education and the updated 2023 California Mathematics Framework, the committee carefully evaluated state-approved curricula for alignment with standards, access and equity, organization, and teacher support.

🧮 Recommended Curriculum:

  • K–8 & Algebra I/II, Geometry: enVision, Savvas (2026)
  • Pre-Calculus: Precalculus: Mathematics for Calculus, 8E, Cengage (2023)
  • AP Calculus: Calculus for AP: A Complete Course, 1E, Cengage (2019)
  • AP Statistics: Math Medic AP Statistics (2026)

The adoption ensures continued opportunities for advanced coursework while supporting deeper student understanding. If approved at the May 7 Board of Education meeting, the new curriculum will roll out in Fall 2026 with comprehensive teacher training and ongoing coaching.

📌 Community members may preview materials at the District Office and submit feedback via the Let’s Talk button on the SMMUSD website.

💻 Instructional Technology & Google Services Update 💻 Instructional Technology & Google Services Update

SMMUSD wants to share some clarity around Chromebook and digital tool use at Webster and across the district. Technology is never a replacement for great teaching—our educators remain at the heart of every lesson. Digital platforms like YouTube (in Education Restricted Mode), Google Translate, and Maps are thoughtfully integrated to support learning, foster creativity, and prepare students for a tech-driven future.

All students are automatically opted OUT of YouTube and other “Additional Google Services.”

✅ To give permission, log in to the Aeries Parent Portal, go to Student Info > Data Confirmation > Authorizations, and update your selection under “Additional Google Services.”

If permission is not granted, your student will still have access to core tools such as Google Classroom, Docs, Drive, and Gmail, but additional services will be disabled.

The most commonly used “Additional Services” include:

  • YouTube (Education Restricted Mode) – Students can view only age-appropriate educational videos.

  • Google Maps / Earth – Used in geography, social studies, and science.

  • Google Translate / Arts & Culture / Photos – Support for language development, cultural exploration, and multimedia projects.

🔐 Reminder: All student accounts are protected through ContentKeeper, a robust content filter used by SMMUSD to ensure students can access only safe, age-appropriate content while online.

  • Avoid using the Our Lady of Malibu (OLM) parking lots.

  • Park only in the Webster lot.

  • Keep Pre-K/TK green curb drop-offs quick to ensure smooth turnover — this area is reserved for families using the Pre-K/TK gate. If your student enters through the main gate (K–5), please use the lower lot or main valet line.

Thank you for helping us ensure smooth arrivals and dismissals each day. Creating a safe and positive learning environment is our top priority — and it starts with all of us working together. We truly appreciate your support!
