Hello Olivehurst families,

  • This is a friendly reminder that anytime food is brought in, it MUST be store bought and in a sealed package. We are not able to accept homemade items or anything where the package has already been opened.
  • Students brought home Program Funding Forms recently. These forms provide us with information that helps secure appropriate funding for our school. Please be sure to fill them out and return them before October 31st. We greatly appreciate your help with this!
  • We are looking for more family members to join our school site council. The school site council helps us direct the allocation of Title 1 funds. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity to participate in your child's education, please fill out the interest form linked below.

Our Eagle Eye is focused on...Preventing & Addressing Bullying

We make every effort to prevent bullying from happening. Unfortunately, it can still happen and we work quickly to address it and prevent it from happening again. If your child reports they are being bullied, we encourage you to ask the following questions:

  • What adult did you report this to at school?
  • Is this the first time you've had a problem with this person?
  • If it's not the first time, how many times has this happened?
  • Did you participate in the negative behavior in any way? (such as doing something unkind to the person)

You can also use the graphic below to help guide your conversation and ask questions about the situation.

Solutions to offer your student:

  • Report it to an adult school (if they haven't already)
  • Try to resolve the problem through peaceful means
  • If peaceful resolution doesn't work, seek the help of an adult at school
  • Keep your distance from the other person while adults work on resolving the issue
  • Avoid doing things to "get back" at the person as that only escalates the situation

Each month, our school focuses on a particular character trait to help teach and reinforce positive behaviors. We kicked off the year focusing on Safety for the month of August and Organization in September. Some students will be receiving awards for demonstrating outstanding organization at our upcoming morning assembly.

October's character trait is Accountability. Here are some ways to be accountable:

  • Complete your classwork on time.
  • Complete and return your homework.
  • Take ownership when you make a mistake: admit what you did wrong, and fix the problem in a positive way.
  • Follow directions from adults both at school and at home.
  • Follow the rules of games being played during recess, PE, and class time.
  • Get a Hall Pass before leaving class or your assigned area.
  • When out of class, go straight to your destination and right back to class (no extra stops).
  • Come to school every day (unless you are too sick).

🚨 Safety Snipet 🚨 Safety Snipet

Our door buzzer is one of the first lines of defense we have in keeping our campus safe. In addition to safety, controlling the number of visitors in the hallway and office at one time helps us maintain confidentiality when discussing student matters. Please help us out by not opening the doors for other visitors or letting others in as you exit. Everyone needs to use the buzzer for safety and confidentiality. We greatly appreciate your partnership in this!

Dear Olivehurst Elementary Families,

As we enter the month of October, we want to take a moment to reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for every student at Olivehurst Elementary.

October can sometimes be a challenging month on school campuses. By this point in the school year, the excitement and newness of the beginning of the year have begun to fade, and students are becoming increasingly comfortable with their classrooms, routines, and peers. Additionally, October is a month with few scheduled breaks from school. As students settle into the year, we can sometimes see an increase in challenging behaviors. Our staff is being proactive in addressing these challenges and working together to ensure that all students continue to experience success throughout the school year.

At Olivehurst Elementary, we maintain high expectations for all members of our school communityβ€”students, staff, families, and community members. We believe that clear, consistent expectations help create an environment where students feel safe, supported, and empowered to learn. We are committed to holding ourselves and one another accountable to these expectations because we know that consistency is essential to student success.

As part of our PBIS program, all students have been explicitly taught our schoolwide expectations. These expectations are reinforced and practiced daily, and when students make choices that do not align with our expectations, appropriate and logical consequences are provided. Our goal is always to educate our students, and that education extends beyond academics. We want students to develop the social, emotional, and behavioral skills they need to make positive choices and be successful both in school and throughout their lives.

One message we are reinforcing with students is β€œNo means no.” When an adult provides a clear direction or establishes a reasonable boundary, students are expected to follow that direction. A β€œno” is not an invitation to debate, negotiate, or continue seeking a different answer. Learning to accept boundaries and respond appropriately to them is an important life skill, and students are expected to practice this skill at school. When expectations are not followed, there may be appropriate consequences to help students understand the impact of their choices and learn from the experience.

We have also implemented schoolwide hall passes as an additional way to support student accountability and protect instructional time. Students who are outside of their classrooms are expected to have a hall pass signed by an adult indicating that they have permission to be out of class.

Instructional time is extremely valuable. Every minute students spend engaged in learning contributes to their progress toward the grade-level standards and skills they need to master. There will be times when a teacher determines that it is not an appropriate time for a student to leave the classroom. When a teacher says β€œno,” students are expected to respect that decision and wait until an appropriate time. This is not about being unfair or restrictive; rather, teachers must protect instructional time so they can provide focused instruction and support to all students.

Students rise to the level of the expectations we set for them. When we set high expectations and provide students with the support and consistency they need to meet those expectations, we are confident that every student can grow and succeed.

We greatly appreciate the partnership and support you have shown our school as we work together to hold students to high standards. We encourage families to reinforce these same expectations at home, including the message that β€œno means no.” When students receive consistent messages and expectations at school and at home, they are better equipped to understand boundaries, make positive choices, and develop the skills necessary for success.

Thank you for your continued trust, support, and partnership. Together, we will continue working to provide a safe, respectful, supportive, and positive learning environment where every Olivehurst Elementary student can learn, grow, and thrive. Together we SOAR!
