“Foster Growth by Challenging Critical Thinkers to Take Risks,

Honor Differences & Care for Others”

CONTINUED GROWTH IN MATH CONTINUED GROWTH IN MATH

As you know, last Friday, our teachers spent the day focused on analyzing students’ mid-year growth and achievement data in reading and math. It was an incredibly productive day of reflection, collaboration, and planning—both at the grade level and for individual classes and students. We're excited about the progress we've seen so far this year, but we’re also committed to continued growth, especially in math.

Focus on Math Growth

One of our ongoing priorities at Gold Rush is supporting students’ growth in math. While our mid-year achievement data in both reading and math surpasses the district’s scores, we recognize the importance of fostering continued progress, particularly in mathematics. For us, growth isn’t just about whether students are meeting, exceeding, or approaching grade level standards—it’s about the rate of progress each student is making toward those standards.

Our goal is for all students to make high levels of growth, and our teachers have been working hard to make that happen. On Friday, each grade level team identified the priority standards for their curriculum. They then developed informal assessments aligned with these standards, which will be used throughout the instructional cycle to track progress and adjust teaching as needed.

Real-World Problem Solving and Conceptual Understanding

In addition to focusing on foundational skills, we’re placing a big emphasis on helping students develop deeper conceptual understanding, especially when it comes to solving real-world problems. Teachers are encouraging students to model, reason, and think critically—skills that will help them apply what they’re learning in meaningful ways.

This shift toward real-world problem solving requires students to use math in more complex contexts. Our teachers have been working together to prioritize these problem-solving opportunities in daily lessons, ensuring that students have plenty of practice in both skill development and deeper thinking.

The Importance of Math Fact Fluency

Even as we challenge students with more complex problems, we cannot overlook the importance of basic math fact fluency. A strong foundation in math facts is essential for students to tackle more challenging problems with confidence. We truly appreciate the support you give at home in helping students practice their math facts—whether it’s through flashcards, math games, or simply finding ways to make math a part of everyday life.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting your child's growth. We look forward to seeing even more progress as we move through the second half of the school year!
