Celebrating Wall of Honor Inductees
Coaches Charles Smith and Kerry Winberry Honored
Coaches Charles Smith and Kerry Winberry were recognized Feb. 7 for their service and the lasting impact they've had on our community as the latest inductees for the Wall of Honor at Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium. The Springdale Athletic Foundation, Springdale Athletics and Springdale School District began the Wall of Honor to honor those who have made significant contributions to Springdale Athletics in the Springdale School District.
Coach Charles Smith
Coach Charles Smith began serving the Springdale School District in 1970 as a physical education teacher and a football, basketball and track coach at Springdale Junior High School. Smith moved to Springdale High School in 1973 to work as the head track coach and an assistant football coach under Jarrell Williams.
The Bulldogs won eight conference championships, two state championships and the state runner-up title during Smith’s time as an assistant football coach. Six records were set for the school during his time as head track coach, four of which still stand.
Smith moved to the assistant basketball position in 1982, where he stayed for eight seasons before becoming head basketball coach for Springdale High in 1990. The Bulldogs were conference champions four times and state runners-up once during his time as head coach. Smith had players named as All-Conference athletes 30 times and All-State athletes 17 times.
Smith started the Springdale High Bulldog Bowling program in 2008 and retired from teaching and coaching in 2009 after 39 years of service to youth.
“It was a blessing from God and a privilege to be involved as teacher and coach at Springdale Public Schools,” Smith said. “Thank you very much for this honor.”
Smith was joined on the court for the presentation Feb. 7 by his wife, Karen.
Coach Kerry Winberry
Coach Kerry Winberry became the head football coach at Central Junior High School in 1978, winning the conference championship his first year in the position. Winberry then transitioned to Springdale High School to serve as offensive line coach under the guidance of the legendary Jarrell Williams.
Winberry credits Williams for much of the success he experienced as a coach at Springdale High and was part of the Bulldog team crowned 4A state champions in 1982. Winberry moved to serve as defensive coordinator and head track coach in 1987 and helped lead the Bulldogs to the state championships in 1989 and 2005. He likewise coached athlete Chis Smith as a competitor for the state decathlon title in 1988 as head track coach. Smith went on to compete and finish sixth in the nation at the Golden West Decathlon in Sacramento, Calif.
The coach thanked everyone who contributed to his career, to include his wife, Diane, for caring for and sacrificing for a man who chose a coach’s path in life. Winberry also expressed his appreciation to Jarrell Williams, Gus Malzahn, all the fellow assistants of the Springdale High School football program, fans and athletes.
“I will forever remember the mental toughness and drive to win they exhibited to pay the cost of winning in football and now in real life as adults,” Winberry said of the athletes he coached over the years. “I sincerely thank you for this honor.”
Winberry was joined on the court Feb. 7 by his wife, Diane.
