The school year is off to a GREAT start at Blue Rapids Elementary. The teachers, staff and I were so excited to see the students back in the building. Here are a few announcements from the Blue Rapids building.
- Be sure to have money on your student's lunch account if they are going to eat hot lunch at school.
- Safety of students is our top priority. Pick up and drop off time can be hectic, be sure that students use sidewalks and crosswalks during this busy time.
- Make sure that you sign up for your student's class on Bloomz. This is the teacher's primary way of communicating with parents. Class codes were given at back to school night or open house. If you lost your code, contact your teacher and they can get it to you.
- If your child has to miss school for some reason, be sure to call your student in excused first thing in the morning.
- We have hot weather coming up this week, be sure your student hydrates outside of school and brings a water bottle to school. School appropriate shorts and t-shirts help students stay cool as well. We will keep an eye on things at school and adjust activities if needed.
Thank you parents for your support and all you have done to help make the start of this school year a success. As always if you need anything do not hesitate to call me or come in and visit.

Meet Our New Staff
Amy Young
Welcome Amy!
Amy Spoonts
Amy Spoonts will be the Waterville Elementary special education teacher. Amy grew up in Beattie where she attended PreK-6th grade and then attended junior high and high school in Marysville. After graduating, she attended Bethany College where she got a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. Amy played tennis while attending Bethany and that's where she met her husband, Sean.
They have 3 kids: Garrison will be a sophomore at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth where he also plays baseball, Carson will be a senior and enjoys being involved in football, basketball, and track along with lots of other school activities, and Teagan will be an 8th grader and is excited to participate in volleyball, basketball, and track as well as other activities.
Amy just completed 24 years of teaching and has spent most of that time in the regular education classroom (17 years at the 4th/5th grade level and 7 years in PreK). She's taught in a variety of places including Marion, Onaga, Russell, and Eureka. In each of those places her family has enjoyed being very involved with school activities as well as activities in the community. "Our schedule is typically very busy, but that's our "normal!" As if having 3 kids at different levels, new jobs, and a new community wasn't enough, I'm also going to help coach high school volleyball this coming year. I'm excited for all of these opportunities!" Amy shared.
In her spare time, Amy enjoys spending time outside with her family, cooking/baking, experimenting with new designs on her Cricut machine, walking, going to thrift stores and garage sales, playing games, and enjoying nature. "I'm also a Seint Beauty artist. Lastly, I love all things with polka dots and cows!"
Welcome Amy!

Melinda Flower
Melinda started working at Valley Heights as a substitute custodian 18 months ago. She has enjoyed working in all buildings but is especially excited to be working in the Waterville building because she has always loved that age group of children. Melinda ran a daycare for 12 years and also has enjoyed working at the Blue Valley Cafe and Casey's General Store in the past. Melinda shares, "Serving the community and helping people always makes for a good day!"
Welcome Melinda!
Caley Brenner
Caley will be joining the Valley Heights staff as our PreK-12 Counselor. Some may recognize Caley because she substitute taught for a short period in 2020, and also completed her generalist practicum during the 20-21 school year. Caley recently graduated from Washburn University with her master’s of social work. Previously, she received both under grad degrees from WU, one in Sociology and one in Social Work. Caley has always loved working with children and has worked with children in different capacities such as pre-school teacher, preschool assistant director, community mental health case manager and social work intern at Valley Heights and Bluemont Elementary School. She also worked with both middle school and high school students the past two years assistant coaching Volleyball, boys and girls basketball, and MS/HS track. Caley was originally an elementary education major before switching school tracks, so working with students in the school setting has always been in her future career path.
Caley was raised all her life in Randolph and attended Blue Valley. She moved back a few years ago and plans to settle down in this area, and appreciates the small-town vibe. Caley lives with her fiancé and their two cats, Eugene and Hazel, and crazy dog, Doris. They are getting married in September of this year.
Welcome Caley!
Brooklyn Coleman
Brooklyn Coleman is the new Music instructor for Valley Heights High school, and the band instructor for 5th-6th grade. She is so excited to have this opportunity to teach the kiddos about music. Music has been a passion of hers since she was a kid. She started playing her first instrument at 3 years old and is mostly self-taught, playing many different instruments by ear. Brooklyn comes from a large family having seven siblings. Each one of them knows how to play an instrument, including her parents. Her family has been a worship team for years, and they now have a ministry in Hastings, Nebraska. She is currently serving on the worship team at New Hope in Marysville. She has an Associate’s degree in Biblical Studies, and was working on her bachelor's degree in marketing. She now has the opportunity to switch that to get her degree in music. She truly believes that God opened this door. She is so excited to get to know each and every student and can't wait to see what the future holds for them. Welcome to Valley Heights Brooklyn!

Sign Up now for Colts Round Up!
Colts Round-Up is an after-school enrichment program that runs Monday through Thursday from 3:30—5:30.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS BE PICKED UP ON TIME EACH DAY.
There will be transportation provided at the end of CRU for students back to BR. There is no rural transportation.
Blue Rapids students need to be picked up at the bus stop by 5:40.
There will be NO FEE for Colts Round-Up at this time however this form is crucial to keeping a record of the number of students we serve for grant money.
The impact of an afterschool program is vital. Colts Round-Up provides a safe, nurturing place with opportunities to reinforce learning from school, teach social skills, encourage good citizenship, and allow parents peace of mind while they finish their workdays.
As a community and school district, we are blessed to have fantastic staff & families. Colts Round-Up supplies a healthy snack, enrichment activities, social interaction with their peers as well as opportunities to enhance the lives of others through community service. We will continue to emphasize character-building and physical activity.
This year, Colts Round-Up will again offer programming for the KP-6 grades. We hope that this can have a positive impact on the families and students in our community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Program
Driven by Connection
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentorship between a trusting adult and a student in the Waterville Elementary School. Bigs (Adults), apply to the program and go through an extensive interview process and background check to ensure the safety for all students. Littles (Students), are referred by their teachers, or parents can request their child participate in the program. This mentorship takes place at the school, usually during lunch and recess times or at Colts RoundUp. If you would like to be a Big and volunteer to make a difference in the life of a child, contact us at 785-363-2530. If you are a parent wanting to refer your child to our program, please let our office or classroom teacher know and we will help walk you through the process!
