Restorative Practices
TVUSD SEL Team Newsletter
What is Restorative Practices?
The fundamental belief of Restorative Practices is that human beings are happier and more cooperative and productive and more likely to make positive changes in behavior when those in positions of authority do things with them rather than to of for them.
In TVUSD, we are seeking to integrate Restorative Practices to:
- Continue to foster healthy relationships
- To provide an intentional focus on improving student, staff, family, and community relationships
- To develop our expertise around understanding why behavior occurred to teach how to prevent it from happening again
- To decrease behaviors of concern, interfering with instruction, to improve the academic outcomes for all students
Within Restorative Practices, 80% of the time is spent focusing on proactive, community and relationship building activities. The remaining time is focused on providing a supportive, student-centered approach to respond to situations which impede the learning of students.
Most importantly, we want to ensure that ALL TVUSD students, staff, family and community members feel safe, welcome, valued, heard, respected, and appreciated in our district.

What's next for TVUSD?
Over the next several years, we will be training staff members from all 28 sites and the district office to support our district with the integration of Restorative Practices. The purpose of this integration is provide a lens with which to ensure that we are engaging all voices within our community and working together with all of our educational partners to make decisions that are in the best interest of all TVUSD students.
