Happy School Counseling Appreciation Week!
It has been a great week soaking up the appreciation from students and staff! โค๏ธ
School counselors do not diagnose students and do not offer intensive counseling. Our job is to be there for all students when we are needed. This means being a supportive person if they are having a hard day and need to talk, something is happening outside of school, they are struggling with friends, self-esteem, homework, grades, or need help focusing in class and improving their self-control. School counselors offer this support to all students, and using the tier 2/3 system, provide small group counseling for students working on building a skill and individual as needed.
I have had four small groups so far this year, having 39 sessions. Our groups have focused on building friendship skills, classroom etiquette, emotional regulation, and a girls' group centered around communication and strengthening relationships. I have had 110 classroom counseling lessons which have been centered on careers, learning styles, making goals, kindness and friendship, strong emotions, and self-esteem. We also learn about our monthly Character Counts traits and have discussions and activities based on each one.
What I value most in our school, is the trust of students and being a safe and reliable person for them to come to with whatever they may need. From August to January, I have had 601 individual counseling sessions. In one of my thank you cards this week, a student shared they loved how happy I am to always see studentsโit means so much to be a consistent person for our students and to hold them all with positive regard!
Our January Character Counts was Responsibility. A big congratulations to the students below!
