The Underwood Way
Comets Elementary Newsletter November 2025
Time Flies!
It’s hard to believe it’s already November! As we reflect on the first part of our school year, I’m proud of how far we’ve come together. We’ve started a new system to better respond to each student’s individual needs, celebrated two successful Underwood Way Assemblies recognizing our students’ accomplishments, and launched our new ELA curriculum.
As we move forward, our focus remains on personalized learning—helping every student grow in their skills while also building strong, positive relationships that make school a place they want to be.
My ask of you is to stay involved and connected. If you ever have concerns—please reach out. If you’re unsure about what your child is learning—just ask. If your child is struggling with peers—we’re here to support. Our school and community reflect one another, and by working together, we can make both even stronger.
We can’t do it alone, and your partnership means everything. Thank you for being such an important part of our Underwood family.

ND A + and School Accountability
The ND A+ results are an important tool for our school because they show how students are growing and achieving. This helps us spot learning gaps, predict end-of-year progress, and adjust our instruction to better meet student needs. Teachers use this data to personalize learning for each child, and administrators use it to make sure all students are on track with state standards.
These results also appear in our School Accountability Report Card, which helps schools like ours reflect and continue improving. We’re currently reviewing our 2024–2025 report card data and will share the finalized information with families in mid-November.
We’re so proud of the hard work our students and staff have put in this year and truly appreciate your partnership in supporting every child’s success!
Parent Teacher Conferences
We had a great turn out for our Parent-Teacher Conferences in the Month of October! Thank you to all of the parents/guardians who attended.
This is a great way to to build a partnership between home and school to improve a child's academic and social development.

Greetings!
For our Accelerated Reader program this year, I am selecting “AR Stars of the Month.” These will be either the student in each grade earning the most points for the month or a student who has made significant improvement. They will be posted in the hallway outside the Library. October’s AR Stars are: Hadley - 3rd, Khloe - 4th, Cooper - 5th, and Pearce - 6th. Way to read!
We also have two students who’ve already earned over 100 AR points and their ticket to the annual 100 AR Point Field Trip in the spring: Otto and Cooper - impressive work! Grades 2-6 students will have until roughly the end of April to earn 100 points and a spot on the field trip.
Book Blast was a phenomenal success this fall! Thanks to your participation, every student in our elementary school received at least two books of their own to keep, each teacher received a set of ten books for their classroom, and four teachers received classroom shopping sprees (based on class participation) to get books or other items for their classrooms! We appreciate everyone who helped make this possible, and look forward to making it an annual fall event. Check out the recent or soon-to-be published Central McLean News-Journal’s coverage of our Book Blast deliveries!
During October, our Elementary Library classes in grades PreK-2 focused on fall/Halloween stories with crafts, fiction vs. nonfiction, and beginner coding/computer skills with activities using www.kodable.com. We also discussed the importance of limiting our screen time and read The Couch Potato by Jory John during Digital Citizenship week (October 20-24). Grades 3-6 learned about and explored many different book genres such as: historical fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, folktales, science fiction, and graphic novels. For November, grades PreK-2 will be Grades 3-6 will be
The Bookmobile will be here on Thursday, November 20th. Please help remind students to return Bookmobile items if they haven’t already. Thank you!
