A Note from the Principal
Day 20/180
Tomorrow is a rare schoolwide Spirit Day, with both our JES and JMS assemblies taking place on the same day (at different times, of course.) Our JMS Meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday was rescheduled, creating a full day of Jacobs spirit. As always, we encourage our JES students to wear their Hull blue and gold and our JMS students to represent their House colors.
Our One Word for the year was officially hung in the cafeteria this week and will be on full display during tomorrow’s assemblies and throughout the year ahead. Be CURIOUS will serve as a daily reminder to our students and staff to ask questions, seek to understand, explore new ideas, and approach learning and one another with curiosity rather than judgment.
The state has also started to release data from the 2025–2026 school year. I shared much of that information with staff during our meeting yesterday and am excited to begin sharing it with families as well. I could not be more proud of our students, families, and, of course, our teachers. There is a lot to celebrate, and I look forward to sharing more of those results in the weeks ahead.
One area we have placed a significant emphasis on over the last several years is attendance. We know that simply being in school matters and that consistent attendance plays an important role in a student’s academic and social growth. Thanks to the commitment of our families and the work of our staff, our chronic absenteeism rate has dropped tremendously over the past five years. Please take a look at the visual below to see just how far we have come. This is certainly something worth celebrating, while continuing to recognize that every day in school matters.
As always, thank you for your continued partnership and support. There is so much to be proud of at the Jacobs School, and even more to look forward to as we continue working together to make this our best year yet.

The Superintendent's Weekly Message
The Hull Public Schools are definitely trending in the right direction! We carefully track specific data points and are serious about making sure improvements are made when the data informs us that we can do better. As part of our ongoing review of data, we set goals and develop strategies for improvement. In the fall, schools get the results of our efforts in the form of updated results and trends. It is worth pausing to reflect on how we are doing.
From the district level, it is great to see that both the Jacobs School and Hull High School improved student attendance last year. Principals Shaw and Hrivnak go into greater details of their school attendance rates in their newsletters: Efforts to ensure improved student attendance have paid off. Coming out of the pandemic, our focus was on making sure we provided highly engaged in-person learning opportunities. Increasing the frequency that students receive that instruction has been a goal for our schools.
While it might seem obvious, the research on student attendance is clear. Drawing on 206 separate studies, a meta-analysis completed in 2022 (Salgado, Cuadrado, & Moscoso) showed that students who miss school at higher rates more than erase the typical gains of a complete school year. School attendance is a partnership between our educators and our families/ caregivers. Thank you for supporting your children with the importance of attending school. Without consistent student attendance, moving the needle on academic achievement becomes a real challenge!
Community. Confidence. Curiosity.
