Principal's Message
Ensuring a Safe, Respectful, and Supportive Environment at Pioneer Middle School
At Pioneer Middle School, we prioritize creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for every student. We understand that concerns about bullying and other misconduct may arise, and we want to address these situations with care and transparency.
To help guide you through our process, we’ve shared information from our district’s website, including a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section. This resource will explain how we handle concerns, the steps we take to support students, and what to expect when a report is made.
We deeply appreciate your partnership in helping to maintain a positive and welcoming atmosphere for all students. If you have any questions or would like further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Assistant Principal Barton's Message - State Testing
Please take a moment to read this message carefully
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we approach the spring semester, we would like to inform you about the upcoming Smarter Balanced Assessments for Math and English Language Arts (ELA), as well as the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science for our middle school students. These assessments are an important part of tracking your child’s academic progress and ensuring we continue to meet their educational needs.
Test Dates:
Smarter Balanced Assessments (Math and ELA): May 13, 15, 20, and 22
Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science: May 21 (8th grade only)
Attendance is Critical: Please plan ahead to ensure your child is present for testing. Absences during these dates can impact your child’s ability to participate and complete the tests. We ask that you avoid scheduling appointments or other activities that could interfere with testing.
Testing is Required: Participation in state testing is mandatory for all students. If, for any reason, you wish to opt your child out of the testing, we require a meeting with an administrator prior to April 4. Please note that opt-out requests will not be accepted without a prior meeting, and no opt-outs will be granted after the cut-off date.
How You Can Help: To support your child’s success, please encourage them to:
Get plenty of rest the night before each test.
Have a healthy breakfast to start the day energized.
Approach the tests with confidence and a positive mindset.
We appreciate your support in ensuring your child is prepared and present for these important assessments. If you have any questions, or if you need to schedule an opt-out meeting, please email us at pioneermsoffice@steilacoom.k12.wa.us before the April 4 deadline. Include your student's full name and grade when requesting a meeting.
Thank you for your cooperation and continued support!
Kristen Barton
Assistant Principal/SHSD Test Coordinator
In Math
Our math classes are continuing to have a great second semester! We would also like to remind everyone that we offer a Math Club from 2:45-3:45 each Tuesday and Thursday. Currently, Math Club is in Mr. Martin’s room on Tuesday and Mr. Stuglemeyer’s room on Thursday. Students do NOT have to purchase an ASB card to attend Math Club. Math Club is a chance for students to get extra support, retake assessments and continue to practice math skills. Here is a look at what each of our math classes are currently working on.
6th Grade - Sixth grade mathematicians are working on writing and solving one-step algebraic equations. Our “hi-cap” sixth grade math students have finished this work and are onto writing and solving one-step inequalities.
7th Grade - Seventh grade math students are working on writing and solving ratios and proportions. Next they will begin to convert between fractions, decimals and and percents, on the way to mastering solving percentage problems.
8th Grade -Eighth grade math students are working with solving systems of linear equations in three different ways: graphing, elimination and substitution.
Algebra - our Algebra students have just concluded their unit covering exponential functions. This included properties of exponents and exponents, graphing exponential functions and sequences. Next they will spent some time covering compound interest before beginning work with polynomials.
Geometry - our Geometry students are continuing their work with transformations including
Below are some pictures of Mr. Martin's 6th grades who worked thru a collaborative learning activity this week to generalize patterns when solving algebraic equations.
