Message from the Superintendent
Now that many have participated in at least one back-to-school night, I want to reinforce a key takeaway: our learning community is committed to creating a culture of belonging and educational excellence.
Back-to-school nights invited parents/guardians into schools to meet their student's teachers and receive information about curriculum standards, assessments provided, and descriptions of routines for the school day. Parents/guardians also learned ways our staff prioritize and nurture care and connection in their classrooms and across the school. Research shows that when students feel a sense of belonging, they engage more fully in learning, persevere, employ critical thinking, build relationships, and have a more positive attitude about school.
Through supportive teaching and learning practices, our teachers, staff, and school leaders are committed to high academic standards in our schools. Every LOSD student participates in rigorous core classes taught to Oregon standards by highly-qualified teachers. In addition to diploma requirements, LOSD continues to offer exceptional academic programs in our high schools, including:
More than 85 percent of our high school students take at least one honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or dual-credit course before graduating. These classes meet a college-level course standard and allow students to gain college credit before even graduating high school;
More than 140 of our high school graduates have earned the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy, an award offered since 2018 for meeting rigorous academic and linguistic proficiency in two or more languages;
Our high schools offer four Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways, a series of courses that provide academic and technical skills, knowledge and training taught by licensed teachers with industry experience.
Our current 97.4% graduation rate leads the state for large comprehensive K-12 school districts. As importantly is the climbing graduation rate of students in our focal groups, with 93.6% of LOSD students with an IEP and 84.6% of LOSD students who are English language learners graduating in four years.
100% of our elementary students learn music from qualified instructors, contributing to more than 70% of our students continuing to take at least one music course during their secondary-level tenure.
I am proud of the commitment of our learning community to delivering rigorous lessons while creating opportunities for students to practice skills, find new interests, and pursue passions in a supportive learning environment.
Earning Oregon Green School Certification
All eleven LOSD schools were recently certified as an Oregon Green Schools (Green Lunchrooms Certification). The OGS certification recognizes our schools for outstanding efforts in lunchroom waste reduction and resource conservation.
Each school did a lunch waste audit last year that led to working on systems to reduce waste. Students, kitchen staff, engineers, and teachers worked together to conduct the audits. This year we will repeat the waste audits, compare the data, and look for new ways to become more sustainable.
Our next step is for each school's sustainability team, including student green teams, the new high school sustainability elective classes, leadership classes, and staff, to decide which area of OGS they want to focus on this year. Find more information about the program on the Oregon Green School website.
Proclaiming Dyslexia Awareness Month
LOSD is committed to equitable educational opportunities by identifying obstacles to educational advancement and endeavoring to remove those obstacles. Dyslexia is a neurological difference, often inherited, that makes it difficult for students to read, write, and spell, and may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience, which can impede vocabulary growth and acquisition of knowledge. Dyslexia affects all segments of society, regardless of race, income, educational background, or ability. Literacy is a critical skill needed for educational success, and students who do not read at grade level by third grade are four times more likely not to graduate from high school with a diploma.
Due Today: Required Technology Consent
Today is the deadline to give consent for your student to use school district software and technology resources (devices, digital textbooks, etc.). To submit tech consent, log into the portal (not ParentVUE). You will need to set up an account to first access the portal. Find the consent and optional protection program information -- including step-by-step instructions to complete the steps online -- on the district website under Find it Fast / Resources.
