Trailblazer Talk
January 2025
Dear SCE Families,
We had such an amazing December at SCE! I hope you and your family enjoyed a wonderful and restful break. We are excited to get back into the groove as we begin a new semester together.
Spring is always a busy time, and it tends to fly by before we know it. One way you can greatly support both our school and your child is by ensuring they are at school every day and arrive on time. Regular attendance is especially important for our youngest learners. We see the biggest attendance challenges in Kindergarten and Pre-K, and consistent attendance makes a huge difference in helping students grow both academically and socially.
Another major focus this year is reading—at school and at home. Please encourage your child to read every day at home. It’s amazing how much progress students can make by reading just a little bit more each day.
As always, we are here to partner with you for your child’s success. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need support.
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your child’s journey. We do not take that responsibility lightly.
Warm regards,
The SCE Team
We Need Attendance Help (SCE isn't doing well with kids being present daily)
Kids Have to Be Present at School to Learn
DID YOU KNOW?
In Texas, all students enrolled in public education are required to attend school regularly; this includes Prekindergarten students. Schools are required to file on parents that do not have students at school regularly.
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read. Kids who miss too much school in PreK & K are less likely to be reading by 3rd grade.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college!
Attendance Matters ⏰
Texas law requires students to be in attendance at least 90% of the time in order to receive credit for the semester.
Attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will graduate from high school than test scores.
Students in kindergarten and 1st grade who are chronically absent will not likely read at grade level by the 3rd grade.
Texas is one of the few states in the country that funds its schools using average daily attendance.
Texas law requires students ages 6-19 to attend school each day that instruction is provided. This also applies to students who are younger than six and have previously been enrolled in 1st grade and to students younger than six who are voluntarily enrolled in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten.
Attendance also effects school distinction designations.

Dress Code
Parents,
We need your support in helping us enforce the school dress code. I’ve attached the specific section where we’ve noticed some recent concerns. Please remember that slits in skirts must also follow the appropriate length guidelines.
As a rule of thumb, students should be able to move naturally—walking, running, raising their arms—without needing to adjust their clothing. If a student has to pull their shorts or skirt down while standing still, the item does not meet dress code requirements.
Thank you for your support in keeping our school environment respectful and distraction-free.

Dear Families –
It’s that time of year when winter weather can impact the school day in MISD, sometimes leading to closures or delayed starts. Be sure you know where to check for the most accurate updates if the weather takes a turn.
Visit https://www.misd.org/cms/one.aspx?portalId=70144917&pageId=70342972 for complete information about how Montgomery ISD decides to close or delay school and how the district communicates in the event of inclement weather.
During bad weather, the district makes every attempt to make the decision to close or delay the start of schools with adequate time for families to make necessary arrangements for childcare. If we believe that the forecast won’t change during the overnight hours, we may make the decision to alter the school day the night before.
Please keep in mind that MISD will not send out or post notification to confirm school is in session. Parents, students, and staff should assume a normal school day unless notified otherwise.
The district utilizes several communication methods to notify parents, students and staff of a closing or delay. One of those methods is via a recorded phone message. If you are not receiving phone calls, texts and/or emails from MISD, please contact your campus registrar to make sure your contact information is current and correct.
In addition to a callout and text, the district posts information on the Montgomery ISD website (www.misd.org) as well as the Montgomery ISD Facebook page and X/Twitter page. The district will also send out an email notification and notify local television and radio outlets.
To help us stay informed during severe weather, MISD provides a dedicated email for reporting road conditions in your neighborhood: Roadconditions@misd.org. This account is monitored during weather events so we can collect timely updates from across the district.
