Ideas for Autumn Activities Ideas for Autumn Activities

Ways to incorporate Assistive Technology into your Halloween fun

  • Program a speech output device with holiday phrases, such as "Happy Halloween" or "Trick or Treat." Here is a link to an article with some ideas how to incorporate Halloween into AAC devices.
  • Connect a switch to the blender or mixer to have some help making autumn treats
  • Adapt a holiday book to make it more accessible. Here is an example of a tactile book from Paths to Literacy.

Virtual Trick or Treat with M&M/Mars

Treat Town Halloween App and Treat-Town.com is open. Register your family, decorate your virtual door, pick costumed avatars.

Participants can invite neighbors and family to join then trick-or-treaters can virtually knock on doors around the country.

Autumn scents for spicing up your sensory activities

A fellow teacher and friend of mine added incorporated smells into her sensory activities during the fall and winter months. Here are a few ideas she used plus a few others I've tried. Just remember to avoid smells that are allergens to individuals that will be around your materials or sensory activities when deciding what scents to use.

  • Add vanilla, cinnamon, or pumpkin pie spice when making edible playdoh
  • Make instant pudding on a tray (it's okay to eat, smell, or feel)
  • Have a mild scented diffuser near a sensory area (have a way to seal or turn off the diffuser in case the smell becomes to strong)
  • Have your students assist with preparing applesauce (washing apples, removing stems, peeling, cutting into smaller pieces). If you start cooking them in the morning, you will have an apple scent in the room and a snack to eat before school is over.

Here are a few more fall sensory activities from the Teaching Mama website and a scented sensory bin from the Fun Littles website.
