This is my 5th year teaching 6th and 7th grade math at ASRMS! When I’m not at school, I love spending time outdoors by the lake with my family. My twin girls are now 20 months old and definitely keep me busy! I also enjoy working on puzzles, baking sweet treats, and getting creative with crafts..

ELA:
6th Grade: Sixth graders are finishing up their first unit in Amplify: Dahl and Narrative Writing. Students are learning about Dahl’s experiences at school as a young boy, and recognizing obvious differences between what school life was like in his time versus today! Very soon, they will begin writing their first formal essay and take the end of unit assessment.
7th Grade: Seventh graders are working hard while reading the memoir, Red Scarf Girl, by Ji-li Jiang. Students are keeping track of Ji-li’s level of hope when life as she once knew gets turned upside down. Right now, Ji-li’s level of hope is down, will that change? They are doing an excellent job working with this complex text!
Math:
6th Grade: Our 6th graders recently wrapped up their first math unit, which focused on operations with rational numbers. Students worked hard developing their skills with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. We are now moving into our next unit, ratios and rates, which is always a student favorite! This unit allows students to explore real-world problem-solving and make meaningful connections between numbers and everyday situations.
7th Grade: Our 7th graders just wrapped up an exciting first unit on ratios, proportional relationships, and scale factors! Students can now easily identify proportional relationships in graphs, tables, and equations, and they are using these skills to solve real-world unit rate problems. Right now, they are bringing math to life by using scale factors to create scaled drawings of their favorite cartoon characters. Up next, we will dive into our second unit: rational number operations.
Social Studies:
6th Grade: Currently, students are adapting to the C.E.R (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) methodology by citing textual evidence to support a historical claim. Students are applying the CER method to the lives of early humans and the major turning points such as: changes to body, migration, tool making, and agriculture. This will culminate in an expository essay differentiating between the Paleolithic and Neolithic Eras of the Stone Age
7th Grade: Namaste. Students are progressing nicely through cluster 3 of Unit 1 on the Indian Subcontinent. In particular, an in-depth analysis of Hinduism, the world’s oldest religion. We will look at the sacred texts, rituals, beliefs, reincarnation, and the concept of Brahma & Atman.
*Did you know: India has the world’s highest vegetarian population with 40% of the population following a vegetarian diet.
Science:
6th Grade: Sixth graders have been wrapping up our first unit, Light and Matter. Throughout this unit, students investigated how light interacts with different materials, including how light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed. They explored the phenomenon of a one-way mirror and developed scientific explanations using evidence and reasoning to explain what they observed. Next, students will begin a unit on thermal energy where they will investigate how thermal energy moves between objects and how particle motion helps explain changes in temperature. Students will participate in hands-on investigations and develop models to explain how energy transfers from warmer objects to cooler objects.
7th Grade: In seventh grade, students are deep into the first chemistry unit, which focuses on chemical reactions and the changes that occur when substances interact. Students are investigating what happens when different materials are combined, gathering evidence of chemical reactions, and developing models to explain how atoms rearrange to form new substances.
Reading:
6th Grade: Our 6th graders have finished our first unit on summarization and have now moved on to making inferences. In this unit, students are using text evidence and background information to infer information that isn’t directly stated by the author. The 6th graders are excelling at this skill so far! They are also continuing their word work, working with the long “e” sound.
7th Grade: The 7th graders have also finished their first unit on summarization and have moved to making inferences. The 7th graders are also using text evidence and background knowledge to create inferences, but are doing so with more advanced texts. Their word work this week and next week is focusing on the roots “voc” and “dict”.

From The Principal
Good afternoon, ASRMS families,
Last week, our students had opportunities to explore new interests and share what they’ve been learning. At the Grade 8 Career Exploration Fair, students spoke with community members about their work, how they got started, and the education and experiences that helped them along the way. We appreciate everyone who took time to help our students imagine possibilities for their own futures.
Friday also brought opportunities for students to showcase their creativity through sixth-grade technology projects and eighth-grade robotics projects. Sharing their work gives students a chance to explain their decisions, answer questions, and take pride in what they’ve accomplished. It’s always exciting to see their ideas take shape!
This week, participating eighth graders will visit Nashoba Tech to explore another option for their high school years. We’re also looking forward to our first middle school PTO meeting on Thursday evening. Whether you have ideas to share, would like to help with an occasional event, or simply want to learn more, we hope you’ll join us.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our students and school.
Sincerely,
Bryan Oelerich
Principal

Help Shape Our Middle School PTO
Join us Thursday, October 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school art room, with virtual participation available.
We’ll discuss your ideas for supporting students, school activities, and our school community.
Please complete the PTO interest form, whether you’d like to attend meetings, volunteer occasionally, or simply receive updates.
No previous PTO experience is needed, and attending does not commit you to a leadership role.
Halloween Dance: Chaperones Needed
Unfortunately, due to a conflict with building use, we were unable to hold our annual Halloween dance this week.
The PTO has graciously offered to organize a Halloween Dance on Friday, November 6. To make that possible, they need chaperones.
Anyone willing and able to chaperone is asked to email asmiddleschoolpto@gmail.com.
Additional event details will be shared once arrangements are confirmed.
School Improvement Plan
Mr. Oelerich will present the middle school’s School Improvement Plan at the School Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The plan focuses on student ownership and reasoning, access to challenging instruction, and coordinated student support.
Families can review the draft presentation here.
Trunk or Treat: Get Involved
Mrs. Couture will host a trunk representing middle school Best Buddies/Unified.
Additional individuals and groups are invited to host trunks and distribute candy.
Interested families can complete the trunk sign-up form.
Looking Ahead
November 3: Staff professional development day.
November 5–6: Parent-teacher conferences and 90-minute early releases.
November 9: Veterans Day breakfast and assembly. We welcome veterans from our school community and encourage families to share the RSVP form with veterans who may wish to attend.
Veteran's Day Assembly
Dear Families and Community Members,
Ayer Shirley Regional Middle School warmly invites all families and members of the public to join us as we honor and celebrate the brave men and women who have served our country at our Veterans Day Assembly and Breakfast.
This special event is an opportunity for our school community to come together to express our gratitude to the veterans who have sacrificed so much in service to our nation.
Veterans are especially encouraged to attend! We would be honored to welcome you to our school, share breakfast with you, and recognize your service. Veterans who wish to participate in the assembly are invited to share stories about their military experiences, service, or what Veterans Day means to them. These personal stories are a meaningful way to help our students better understand the importance of service, sacrifice, and patriotism.
We look forward to bringing our school and community together for this special occasion as we honor those who have served and continue to serve our country.
Thank you to all our veterans for your courage, dedication, and service. We hope you will join us!

Extracurricular Clubs
We are excited to offer several extracurricular opportunities for students this year. Clubs are being promoted through morning announcements and flyers posted throughout the school. We are currently accepting sign-ups and will share a complete schedule once we have confirmed which clubs will run.
The annual extracurricular fee is $50 and covers all clubs a student participates in this school year. Payment will soon be available through FinalForms or may be submitted to the main office by check made payable to ASRMS. NJHS, Band, Musical, and Robotics are exempt from the fee. If a club does not have enough interest to run, we will provide a refund.
