West Linn-Wilsonville Schools Celebrate Black History Month West Linn-Wilsonville Schools Celebrate Black History Month

Students across the West Linn-Wilsonville School District are celebrating Black History Month in a variety of ways during the month of February.

At Athey Creek Middle School, for example, students are engaging in Black History Month learning in all classes in addition to special musical performances. Choir students have spent the month studying Black History in regards to music, while Jazz Band and Orchestra students get ready to host the school's annual Jazz Festival that celebrates black musicians and their impact during the Harlem Renaissance.

In recognition of Black History Month, the district continues to focus on Equity and Inclusion across all schools. The School Board adopted new language for Board and District Goal No. 1 this year to read: "Grow student achievement through the use of high leverage instructional and engagement strategies to raise rigor, disrupt systems of racism, and generate equitable outcomes for all students while eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps." The District continues to prioritize equity and inclusion from a system-wide perspective, hosting an Equity Workshop in late January. The District invited leadership from both the West Linn and Wilsonville communities to continue important work started at the Multi-City Equity Summit earlier this Fall.

Safety Spotlight — Be Careful When Driving Near School Zones

There's quite a bit of road construction taking place across the school district. Please remember to be careful when driving in or near school zones. For important driving reminders, please watch this safety video PSA from Clackamas County Sheriff's Office with help from First Student, and check out helpful tips below:

  • In a school zone, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection — remember, the speed limit is 20 miles per hour.
  • Always stop for school crossing guards.
  • Take extra care to look out for students in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas.
  • If the red lights on a school bus are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop to allow students to safely enter and exit. Wait until the lights stop flashing before continuing forward.
  • Watch out for bikers — slow down and leave at least three feet of space when passing.
  • Check side mirrors for approaching bicyclists before opening your door.

Keep Up to Date on Capital Bond Progress — WLWV Completes Sale of General Obligation Bonds

The West Linn-Wilsonville School District sold $147.9 million of the district’s General Obligation (GO) Bond authorization on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The bond was approved by voters in the November 2019 Election.

Due to high investor interest, the District sold $147.9 million in bonds but will receive $158.1 million for capital projects to be completed over the next few years. The remaining $58.9 million of the $206.8 million bond measure will be sold at a future date to complete the remaining capital projects outlined in the bond measure.

“Because of low interest rates in the market and the attractiveness of the District’s bonds, Wednesday’s sale resulted in a premium that the District can use for projects outlined in the bond measure,” said Chief Financial Officer Son Le Hughes.

The bond proceeds from the Feb. 12 sale will result in several key projects across the West Linn-Wilsonville School District. Capital projects will address overcrowding across the District, increase Career and Technical Education opportunities for students, increase safety and security, upgrade technology, and fund several other projects District-wide.

To learn more about the 2019 Capital Bond, or to subscribe for capital bond updates and communications, please visit the Bond Website.
