National Hispanic Heritage Month
The theme for National Hispanic Heritage Month in 2025 is "Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future". This theme, chosen by the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), celebrates the rich history and achievements of Hispanic and Latine communities while emphasizing their role in shaping the future
What the theme means:
Collective Heritage:
This highlights the shared cultural traditions, stories, and experiences that unite Hispanic and Latine communities.
Honoring the Past:
It recognizes and learns from the historical journeys, lasting achievements, and vital contributions of past generations.
Inspiring the Future:
The theme also focuses on the present and future, celebrating the unique voices and experiences of those who continue to pioneer change and guide the path forward for upcoming generations.
Notable Hispanic Figures
Lin Manuel Miranda- Lin-Manuel Miranda is an award-winning American actor, producer, director, composer, lyricist, playwright, rapper, and librettist. He's best known for creating and starring in the Broadway musicals Hamilton (2015) and In the Heights (2005). He also co-wrote songs for Disney's Moana (2016) and Encanto (2021). Miranda has won Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, and a Pulitzer Prize for his work on Hamilton, In the Heights, and Moana.
Cesar Chavez- Cesario Estrada Chavez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Along with Dolores Huerta and lesser known Gilbert Padilla, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later merged with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee to become the United Farm Workers labor union.
Sylvia Mendez- Sylvia Mendez is a Hispanic American who was born in 1936. She grew up in an era when Hispanics were sent to Mexican schools and weren’t allowed to go to the white schools with more educational resources.
When Sylvia was denied enrollment in one of these white schools, her parents decided to sue the California school system. After several years of fighting, Sylvia was finally allowed to attend, making her the first Hispanic to be able to do so. Her case paved the way for many others. Mendez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama.

Student Video Contest!
My name is Franki Moscato (girl, 23, Oshkosh). I am “that Wisconsin girl” who won a Gold Ticket on ABC’s American Idol. Perhaps you’ve seen me sing the Anthem for the Packers (5), Bucks (7), NASCAR (1), or Whitehouse (2). I am writing to ask you for help communicating a project I am working on to fight teen suicide.
My story includes being bullied out of two schools and finding myself in a dark place. Today, I use my platform and my non-profit, Franki Moscato Foundation, to advocate for teen suicide prevention.
I am inviting Wisconsin students in grades 6-12 to make a 60-second video about being kind, anti-bullying, or somehow preventing teen suicide. See my contest here: http://BeKindContest.com
Video submissions are due by November 1st. We have to hurry! The winning video will be professionally produced and broadcast as a televised Public Service Announcement across Wisconsin. The kids and adults who worked on the project will be invited to be cast in the production spot, and the author’s parents will win a FunJet vacation to the Dominican Republic!

WHO'S UP FOR TRIVIA?
Just for Fun!
Homecoming is a big event that many high schools celebrate every fall. It started as a way to welcome back former students (called alumni) so they could visit their old school, see a football game, and reconnect with classmates and teachers. That’s where the name “homecoming” comes from—people are coming back home to their school.
Today, homecoming is still a time to show school spirit, but now it’s mostly for current students. Schools celebrate with fun activities like spirit week (where you dress up in silly or themed outfits), pep rallies, a big football game, and sometimes a parade. The week usually ends with a homecoming dance, where students dress up, take pictures, and have a great time with friends.
