Lost and Found Announcement
Many students have come to us with sad stories about losing items at school. Coincidentally, our school’s lost and found is overflowing! If your child is missing a jacket, water bottle, lunch box, hat, or a single sock, please let them know that they should check the lost and found!
Attendance and Absences
Families may submit student absence excused notes by:
- Submitting information electronically via AspenGO (preferred method)
- Submitting a hard copy excuse note to the Attendance Counselor
- Emailing DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
We can once again accept absences excuses via email, as this is the only way to electronically attach documents. Please note information received via email may be processed more slowly than excuses submitted via AspenGo.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston
I hope you all had safe and wonderful snow days! This week in class, we spent our time catching up on The Giver. By Monday, February 2nd, all scholars should complete the following assignments to ensure they are prepared for next week:
Complete the CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) paragraph for Chapters 4–5.
Students can access this assignment through Canvas → Class Notebook.
Finish reading Chapter 7 of The Giver.
A PDF copy of the text is available on Canvas for students to access outside of school.
Complete the Note Taking Graphic Organizer for Chapters 2–7 of The Giver.
Next week, we will continue reading Chapters 8–10 of The Giver. Scholars will also take their first Unit Skills Assessment for Term Three, which will include multiple-choice questions and a CER paragraph response to a short text.
Math with Mx. Gomez
Just a friendly reminder that all math homework should be submitted with scratch paper that shows students’ work and math processes. Submitting scratch work is required to receive full credit.
I have reassigned ALL homework that was not completed this week and will not count any homework from this week as late.
Many students were unable to complete this past week’s Pear assignments due to the snow days. I have redirected these assignments to those who have yet to complete them, and they will not be penalized for lateness. Please encourage your child to check that they have completed Pear #39 and Pear #40.
6th Grade Accelerated Math
Despite a few snowy interruptions, Math 6 students are jumping back into learning! Next week, students will be solving and graphing inequalities in both numerical and word problem forms. We will also focus on GEMDAS (also known as PEMDAS), building students’ skills from problems with two operations up to six operations. This work helps strengthen reasoning skills and accuracy with more complex expressions.
7th Grade Math
Next week in Math 7, students will complete the formative assessment that was postponed due to recent snow days. While the schedule shifted a bit, we’re right back on track! After the formative, students will have a practice day to review key skills and apply test taking strategies before taking the RCT, which will wrap up Unit 5 and give students time to practice, reflect, and show what they know.
Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.
Summer Math Acceleration Camp (SMAC) Information
🔎Please direct all questions to DealSummerMath@k12.dc.gov.
As you may know, Deal offers an in-person math acceleration program each year for students who are currently taking Math 6 or Math 7. Students who demonstrate mastery of standards on the Middle of Year (MOY) i-Ready and the End of Year i-Ready (EOY) i-Ready by earning the required score will be invited to participate in SMAC 2026.
We will also offer a summer online asynchronous opportunity for students who will not be available for SMAC. To be invited to participate in the online asynchronous acceleration program students must earn the required score on the MOY i-Ready assessment and share the reason why they are not available for SMAC.
SMAC Boost | June 22 - 25; 9:00 - 12:00 noon (must attend all dates)
SMAC Dates | June 29 - July 23; 9:00 - 12:00 noon (must attend all dates)

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
Students will investigate our final case studies of children's barriers to education. We will then start our United Nations Simulation. Students will learn about the GDP, literacy, and child labor rates of selected countries. They will analyze that data and learn more from an assigned country's perspective. They will use that information to assess which resolutions they support for combatting the barriers to education. They will write and deliver opening speeches before debating and voting.
Here is the new wishlist link if you would like to donate to the Geography classroom.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hi Scientists,
We survived the snow! We haven’t gotten to our weather unit yet to discuss how sleet is formed, but to give you a preview: sleet occurs when snowflakes pass through a warmer layer of air and melt, and then refreeze when they enter the cold layer of air closest to the ground.
This very short week students explored Earth’s place in our universe by investigating constellations and completing their Roots quiz.
Next week, we will spend some time examine the life cycles of stars and then will explore the relationship between mass and gravity. Students will practice their graphing techniques to illustrate this relationship.
Roots!!
Next week we will continue our Term 3 roots. Our roots for next week are:
centric = in the center (think: heliocentric, concentric, egocentric)
*grav = heavy (think: gravity, grave)
*luna = moon (think: lunar, lunatic)
*astro = star (think: astronomy, astronaut)
-ology = the study of (think: biology, psychology)
Keepers: deci, centi, milli
Notes from MLL Support
Next week we will continue HMH and iReady stations. We have a newly implemented vocabulary check as our exit ticket and a new incentive system. Students are very excited to acquire more vocabulary as we learn.
