What an Amazing Start!

The start of the 2024-2025 school year has been fantastic. Students have been amazing and incredibly supportive of each other. Our Gompers staff have worked with our students on incredible experiences to engage them and prepare them for all the learning ahead. However, we know there have been a few glitches we want to improve on.

  • Two parents came to the office looking for their student because they had yet to arrive home after school. In both cases, the students stayed for an after-school activity or took a detour home. Additionally, two students boarded the wrong bus and were safely rerouted to the correct destination. Please speak to your student about the importance of communicating with you if they are not going home immediately after dismissal and boarding the correct bus at their designated bus stop.
  • The lines at the Open House were too long. We've analyzed the conditions and have generated ideas to expedite our entrance to Open House for next year. You will see a quicker process in 2025.
  • Registrations and schedules were higher than in past years, but we'd like to keep them at a higher level. Families will receive multiple communications and support for registration in the spring to facilitate more completed schedules next year.

All things given, the 2024-25 school year is off to a great start with paper airplane aerodynamic experiments, get-to-know-me activities, music performance, origami, locker set-up, athletics, and much more. We look forward to a great school year for all our Hawks to SOAR!

From the Gompers Health Office

As school begins, we would like to address keeping your children healthy and in school. Health history, medication orders and care plans must be done every school year.

STUDENT HEALTH HISTORY and LIFE-THREATENING CONDITIONS

If your student has a significant health history, life threatening allergy, or special medical concern including asthma, diabetes, seizures, or other medical conditions please contact the school nurse so that we can create an Emergency Health Care Plan. A PHYSICIAN’S NOTE IS REQUIRED if your child has FOOD allergies so we can provide substitutions. It must be a DIAGNOSED allergy and not just a sensitivity.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

If your child must receive medication (prescription or over-the-counter) in order to be in school, you will need a "Medication Authorization Form” completed by a licensed healthcare provider or physician also signed and dated by the parent/guardian.

DIABETICS

We must have a School Diabetic Care Plan on file from your physician with medication orders (if needed) in case of emergencies and to assist and care for all diabetic students.

FREE DENTAL SCREENINGS

If you are interested in signing up for a free dental screening at Gompers Junior High please visit the link below. Dental exams are required for 6th and 9th grade students. Dental screenings will be held September 18-20 during school hours. Sign up at: https://opdsdentalservices.formstack.com/forms/joliet_public_schools_district_86

If you have any questions please contact the school nurse, Melissa Quitman, at mquitman@joliet86.org or at 815-727-5276

On time = Success

Arriving at school on time allows your student to start their day positively. When students are late to school, they miss out on time with friends, content, morning announcements, and the time they need to get their day started. Students who are on time have a better day at school. Drop your students off at the Briggs entrance no later than 7:30 AM daily to give them the gift of a wonderful start to the day. On-time = Success!

Off and away, until the end of the day!

The expectations for electronic devices for all students at Gompers are identified below.

  • Students are allowed to bring cellphones to school. However, they must be turned off and put away in their locker while at school.

  • Students may only use their phone at school if they have received permission from a staff member. We understand parents and students need to connect sometimes, especially after dismissal time. We will help with that and supervise that process.

  • Students are not permitted to take photos or videos at school or during arrival/dismissal times.

  • Earpods and other bluetooth headphones/speakers should not be brought to or used at school. We will provide headphones for students who need them throughout the year.

Students violating these expectations are subject to disciplinary consequences and may have their electronic devices held in the office until the end of the school day. This will be communicated to all students however we ask that all families take the time to communicate this as well. It is imperative that families and staff work together for student success.

We understand that student cell phones are technology that our families depend on to keep in communication with their children before and after school. We also know that these devices may be a distraction at school and oftentimes lead to poor decisions resulting in school consequences. We thank all of our families for their continued support this year.

Arrival & Dismissal

We want to remind all families that students drop off and pick up at the Briggs entrance. Cars are not allowed to enter the front driveway due to the buses dropping off or picking up and for the safety of our walking students. To assist you in determining where to go if you are dropping off or picking up your student, please review the map below for a visual of the traffic patterns and where to line up.
