What's Happening at Western
Some thoughts for the starting school year
6/12/26
Dear Western families,
Well, we are down to our last full week with students. It feels like this year was the fastest one yet. I am sure our staff and students are hoping for the slowest summer yet. Maybe not the parents, but definitely the students and staff.
I sent a separate letter yesterday to 8th grade families with all the details about the Promotion ceremony on Friday. Please make sure to read it all carefully.
Next week is packed with our last Spirit Week, end-of-year trips, Field Day, yearbook distribution, 8th grade promotion, and more. It will be a fun week for everyone. I will be sure to fill my next SMORE with lots of pictures.
In my next SMORE, I will include the summer reading and math assignments, information on ordering school supplies and details about sports registration. Believe it or not, I already registered my twins on Final Forms for fall sports, so I am ahead of the game!
A reminder that our 6th graders end on June 19th, which is a day earlier than the 7th and 8th graders, who officially end on June 22nd. Our 7th and 8th graders are never happy about this as they forget that our 6th graders started a day earlier. The last day for 6th graders is a full day, while June 22nd is an Early Release day.
Maybe I will see some of you at the beach tomorrow, as it looks to be a perfect beach day!
Have a nice weekend.
Sincerely,
Suzanne

What's New
Kindness Rock Garden
We want to thank Ms. Jacowleff and many of her students for putting in the hard work to revamp our Kindness Garden after a challenging winter that damaged many of the rocks. The students cleared the space out, repainted many rocks, and added the new rocks our 6th graders painted this year. The result is spectacular, with our garden full of vibrant colors and meaningful messages that promote Steven Sudell’s mission to spread kindness. We would also like to thank Ms. Hinkle for making sure all the art materials needed were provided for our students.
Make-A-Wish Club Visit to the Headquarters
Mr. Marmor, Ms. Grundy and the students in our Make A Wish club went to visit the Connecticut Make A Wish headquarters to learn more about the organization and see where the money the club raised will be going. Everyone at Make A Wish was so impressed with all of the support and generosity we have given the organization this year. They were also very impressed with the students’ behavior on the trip and all the questions about helping others. They shared that we are the only school that has come to visit because no other school will pay for transportation. She also said we raised the most amount of money of Make A Wish Clubs in Connecticut, which we plan to continue for many years to come!
6th grade Stand Out Student Lunch
All of our 6th grade Stand Out Student winners from this year celebrated yesterday with a special Garden Catering lunch and some new Western shirts. Congratulations to all the students for representing what it means to be a Stand Out Students in and out of the classroom. 7th and 8th graders will celebrate next week.
Western’s Field Day is Here!
Our second annual full-school field day is on Wednesday. Right now, the weather looks perfect. The students will not attend any classes that day. It will be a whole-school competition between all 6 teams to win the first ever Field Day trophy. The team that shows the best school spirit by wearing their team colors with accessories will get extra points. Students will not be able to bring any body paint or colored hairspray to put on in school. They must arrive already in their colors from head to toe. The day will end with our staff competing in one final event against one another. The activity will not require any running, jumping, or crawling to avoid any chance of injury. We are sorry, but this is a student-only event. We will take lots of pictures to share with you. It is sure to be a great day!
Upcoming Care Dates
We will be opening up our Care Closet to all families on Tuesday, June 23rd and Wednesday June 24th from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. There will be 5 slots per hour available and you can use the following Sign up to secure a spot. Families will be able to take home clothing, shoes, toiletries and hygiene products before the summer break.
We are continuing to accept donations, so we can restock our closet for the start of the school year. Donations can be dropped off in the main office.
8th Grade Time Capsules
Soon we will be starting the time capsules in 8th grade. The time capsule is a special project at WMS where students create and collect artifacts that represent their 8th grade selves and preserve them for four years. During their senior year in high school, we will reconvene as a group to open these time capsules together! As part of their project, we ask that they write and collect letters to friends to put in their time capsules. We also extend the invitation to you! If you’d like to participate, please write a letter to your child. They will not read the letter now, but rather in four years when they open their time capsules. Many parents write their favorite memories of their kids from middle school, their hopes for them in the future, etc. You can send letters in with your child in a sealed envelope or drop them off in the office as long as it clearly states the name of your child and their English teacher.
If you have any questions, please reach out to their English teacher. If you move or your child does not go to GHS, they are more than welcome to still come back and get their time capsule but we will be utilizing GPS emails to alert students of the event when they are seniors.
Please be sure to have letters brought to WMS by promotion (June 19th).
