A Community of Learners and Readers!
Francestown Elementary School is abuzz with excitement as we embark on a month-long celebration of literacy! Our students have already demonstrated their dedication to reading, collectively amassing an impressive total of 2,040 minutes of reading time. Every day, we embrace the joy of literature with surprise DEAR Time sessions—Drop Everything and Read—where students eagerly dive into their chosen books. It's essential for them to carry their books with them at all times, ensuring they're always prepared to embark on reading adventures.
But the enthusiasm doesn't stop there. Our students are also diligently filling out bookmarks to document the myriad of books they've explored. We encourage families to join in the fun by submitting their at-home reading minutes, which we happily add to our growing total. Additionally, we're thrilled to incorporate reading minutes from the Read-a-Thon website, enhancing our collective reading journey.
Fridays are a highlight of the week as we eagerly anticipate the arrival of our mystery reader. This week, we were delighted to welcome back Ms. Gibney, who captivated us with her storytelling prowess. These mystery reader sessions serve as an exciting prelude to our upcoming Literacy Night on May 23rd, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM.
Mark your calendars, because Literacy Night promises to be an event not to be missed! We are thrilled to host Susie Spikol, who will grace us with insights into her journey as a writer. Susie will also share excerpts from her book, "The Animal Adventurer's Guide." Copies will be available for purchase, offering attendees the opportunity to take a piece of the literary magic home with them.
Join us as we celebrate the power of words and the joy of reading at Francestown Elementary School. Together, let's ignite a passion for literacy that will continue to inspire and enrich our community for years to come.
Our Mystery Reader Was Here!
And the Guest Was...
We had a special guest today. Students were provided with a new clue each day.
- This person knew the students.
- They had short hair
- They used to work in the office.
Today Mrs. Gibney paid a visit. She did a dramatic reading of "Don't Let the Pigeon Ride the Bus" and "Edwina, The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She was Extinct".

Cornucopia Returns to FES
If you haven't seen or noticed, The Cornucopia Project has been busy at FES. They have rebuilt our garden beds. They have even added a new one. Mrs. B's class prepared the beds for spring. They also planted sunflower seeds. The pea plants were tried. They made students' tongues green!

The Sound of Our Words
Mrs. Doell's class focused on figurative language this week. The photos show students hard at work analyzing poems to find alliteration, simile, and onomatopoeia. Nice job!!
A Word From Mrs. Neilssen
Recorders, Instruments, and Broken Washing Machines
K/1 learned about the percussion family. Everyone got a turn playing the special Triangle! Ask your student to share the silly song we learned about a broken washing machine.
Grade 2 applied what they knew about solfege and the music alphabet and discovered skips and steps on the music staff. A favorite activity was Human Music Notes on a life-size staff.
Grades 3 and 4 continued to learn recorder and 4th graders chose a special song to share at the end of the year!
