Husky Student Writer Spotlight
“I like soup,” said Trysten Lofthouse when asked his thoughts on soup.
I like soup, but I don't often make it. I do, however, make a lot of burgers, and when I make them, I add way too many seasonings. They still end up tasting good, even though lemon pepper fish seasoning probably isn't supposed to go on a burger. Being in leadership feels like that burger—or like soup. It’s a mix of things you wouldn’t think would go together, yet they combine into something that’s actually pretty awesome. The thing that has exemplified this for me is the new monthly Husky News Network.
It was shortly after the leadership trip to Seaside that the idea of a newscast was agreed upon. I remember that soon after leaving the conference, we started discussing ideas for a potential “Husky News Network,” or HNN, as we called it. Speaking of names, there were many thrown around, such as SNL (Sherman News Live), The Husky Howler, or LPFN (Lemon Pepper Fish News)… just kidding.
When planning HNN became a priority, we divided into groups based on the segments we would focus on. I recall that most people wanted to be part of the sports segment, but of course, only so many could join it. The other segments include school news, club interviews, weather, “This or That” winners, and Hot Takes! The Hot Takes segment confuses me because they don’t feel like true hot takes—at least, to me, a hot take should genuinely provoke someone. As I once heard at a leadership conference, “Yeah, I can’t be friends with someone if we disagree on our favorite pizza flavor.”
The segment I predict will be the most popular is the student-athlete interviews, where prominent student-athletes are asked questions that sometimes result in very memorable answers. “If I could travel back in time, I would go back to before Bitcoin was invented and buy a lot of it,” said Diego Ambriz when asked where he would go if he could travel back in time. In short, I am quite excited about the future of Husky News, and I can’t wait to see how we improve throughout the year!
