What a great week at DKHS. Today’s post is coming from Indianapolis where I am with 9 of our kids and Ms. Hebenstreit at the FFA National Convention. This is a BIG event with FFA chapters from every state, Puerto Rico, and The Virgin Islands. Imagine 70,000 teenagers in navy corduroy jackets. The convention hall hosted a giant college and career fair, vendor displays and education, service projects, science projects and student showcase presentations. They packed the Indiana Convention Center as well as Lucas Oil Stadium with everything Ag Science and FFA you could possibly think of and more. I think our kids had their eyes opened to the opportunities in this field and how FFA can help them develop the traits and skills necessary for success in or out of the Ag Science field. Check out the DK FFA Facebook page for highlights and ongoing updates as we build this program. Here are some comments from some of our kids on this trip.

Lucy: This FFA convention has taught me how to be a better leader and how to make good friends through communication and listening skills. I learned that by taking the time to listen to everyone, hearing their different stories, and understanding the diverse backgrounds in the world, we can come together as a community and make a change. Making changes in the world will help us for the better and allow others to learn about our organization and the good we strive to do today. Overall, I believe FFA is one of the best community organizations offered through our school. If the opportunity is presented to others, I would 100% recommend that they take it. I’m very grateful for the opportunities and chances I was given to be part of this community and this trip. This National Convention has taught me so much, and I’m very excited about it. I hope that future generations and classes understand the importance of agriculture and the impact FFA has on the world.

Evelyn: I've learned from FFA that I have to be patient, I have to be realistic. Sometimes, we can be clouded with judgment and have unrealistic expectations. When coming from a well-developed chapter to a brand new one, it's been hard to adapt. I learned that I can't expect the same standards as I once did, and predict how much this means to other people. Before moving, I had a basic understanding of mindfulness and a realistic mindset, but throughout this trip/two months, I've expanded my skills, which overall develops me into a more mature, empathic person.

Tori: This experience has been once in a lifetime and it's been great. I'm glad I got to meet so many people and learn more about what's out there. This trip is something I would recommend for anyone to try and see what you can do.

Olivia: The National FFA Conference exceeded my expectations. I gained many valuable skills that I will carry into my future and made friends I would never have met without FFA.

Audrie: I have learned so many valuable life lessons on this trip, and it has truly shown me what FFA is about—bonding with others and exploring potential future opportunities.

Sophie: The 2024 national convention has taught me many different things. From meeting new people, how to be a better person, and to show leadership and respect for representing our chapter. I met so many new amazing people that have taught me about FFA and that show me and my friends so much respect.

Sam: On this trip, I have visited multiple farms—some extraordinary and others less well-known. In addition to that, I’ve enjoyed the other activities outside of the National Convention, whether it was McDonald's in the morning or a grilled cheese waffle. It’s all been great. However, the best part was the time spent with others throughout the trip. Any problem that arose seemed to be quickly resolved through our teamwork and actions, no matter what it was.

This week our Central Division Champion volleyball team hosted the other division winners in a round robin format. Our girls competed well against the other champs with Kalamazoo Christian coming out on top. Our football team wraps up their season tonight on Senior Night at home against Parchment. Come out as we celebrate our senior band members, cheerleaders, and football players in our annual Pink Out Cancer Awareness Game, and Senior Night. Our other teams are also finishing their regular season play and moving on to the MHSAA state tournament level.

Thank you to those who came out the last two Tuesdays to our Parent/teacher Conferences. Marking period one will be over soon so if you have not had the chance to connect with your child’s teachers please do so so we can maintain good communication.

This week’s Hogie’s Heroes are our FFA Chapter kids who traveled to the National Convention in Indianapolis. We honor their trailblazing spirit and the way in which they fully embraced the activities of the convention and represented all of us very well. We are proud of you!!! Go DK!!!! Go FFA!!! AP Environmental Science Field Trip AP Environmental Science Field Trip

Last Friday, our AP Environmental Science class had an incredible day aboard the GVSU research vessel D.J. Angus out of Grand Haven! They dove into hands-on science, collecting and analyzing water samples like true researchers.

Not only did they learn to use relevant scientific equipment, but their data will contribute to an ongoing water monitoring project that's been making waves since 1989!

Thanks to everyone involved in this amazing educational outreach program—what a fantastic way to learn about our precious lakes!

MCTI Tour MCTI Tour

Some of our juniors and seniors took a tour of MCTI, which is located on Pine Lake. This school offers training in 13 different trade programs for students with disabilities.
