Blacklick Bulletin
Week of January 6, 2025
A Message from Principal Groves
Dear Blacklick Families:
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful winter break with your family!
The month of January is action packed and we will be back and ready to learn at Blacklick when students return on Monday, January 6. We are excited to welcome our students back to the building!
This Friday, January 10 students will bring home their report card for Quarter 2. Please review the report card and sign the report card envelope. You keep the report card at home and send the signed envelope back to school with your child. Please contact your child's teacher if you have questions after reviewing the report card.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns at 614-759-5100 or by email at grovesk@gjps.org.
Respectfully,
Kristen Groves
One School/One Book Kick Off: January 9, 2025
We are so excited to be kicking off our One School/One Book project with our students on January 9, 2025. Be on the lookout for more information about this wonderful school project coming home with your child on Thursday! The goal of this project is to promote a love of reading with our students!
Cellphone/SmartWatch Reminders
We want students to be engaged in learning and not distracted by devices. Just a reminder from our Student Handbook:
"CELL PHONES & SMART WATCHES
Cell phones are permitted at school, but must remain off and in the student’s book bags throughout the school day. Smart watches are also permitted, but should only be used as a clock while at school. Students are not permitted to send or receive text messages or phone calls on cell phones or smart watches during the day. Additionally, photos may not be taken with cell phones or smart watches at school. On state testing days, smart watches are not permitted to be worn. If a parent/guardian needs to reach their student during the school day, they should call the school office at 614-759-5100. The school is not responsible for cell phones or smart watches that are lost, stolen, or damaged."
Thank you for your help and understanding.
Recess Update - Dress Warm!
As you know, Ohio weather is all over the place and can change from week to week/ day to day/ and even hour to hour! Some days are pleasant while other days can be down right COLD! We will be going OUTSIDE for recess as long as the temperature (including windchill) is 20 degrees or higher. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for outside play (coat, gloves, hat, etc.).
Book Fair Update from Mrs. Ball, Librarian
THANK YOU, Blacklick families, for a GREAT book fair in November!
With our increased student body, we had record sales of over $20,000, which raised over $5,000 for our students in the library.
We appreciate all the support from families with volunteering and shopping at our fair that made this success happen.
We'll be back with Scholastic again next November. Thank you again!

Valentine's Day Celebration - Thursday, February 13, 2025
It's time for our annual school-wide Valentine's Day party at Blacklick Elementary.
The parties will be held on Thursday, February 13 from 1:15 - 2:30 p.m in each classroom. Your teacher will reach out to get volunteers to plan the party for their class.
It is extremely important that you and any parents who plan to attend the party complete the volunteer application/background check as soon as possible. Gahanna-Jefferson Schools Volunteer Application
As a volunteer there are a few things that you are responsible for:
- Contact your teacher to see if they have any specific requests/ideas for the party.
- Collaborate with the other volunteers for your classroom to start organizing.
- Plan out the party - Typically, parties consist of four to five stations. These can include passing out Valentines, crafts, and games. Having a parent or two help lead each station is helpful.
- Review and get approval of the party plan approved by the teacher
- Get supplies for crafts and games
- HAVE FUN at the party!
- Help with clean up
Things to know:
- Students are not permitted to exchange valentines that contain candy or food due to the district food policy. If candy or food is attached to the valentine, they will not be distributed.
- Funding the party (mostly craft or game supplies) can be done in a variety of ways.
- Covered by the party volunteers
- Creating an Amazon Wishlist for any family to purchase
If you have any questions, please reach out to the PTO at ptoblacklick@gmail.com.

Library in Grade 2
We read some books after the Book Fair and then talked about technology as well. We continue to work on how to be safe online and last week, we introduced Hour of Code on code.org. Students learned that there are many ways to do something and that it is okay to fail at first, as long as you try again.
BES Staff Favorite Things
A list has been complied of the Blacklick staff's favorite things. It is important to understand the teachers are not asking for gifts. We know that many parents might want to get their child's teacher a gift and this list is to help you select something the teacher would like. Please do not feel obligated to buy a gift for your child's teachers/staff members. A thoughtful note from you and/or your child at any time of the year is appreciated just as much or more as any gift.
