Greetings, Warrior Families.

January was a fast month for us as we wrapped up the first semester and ventured into second semester. Now that we are three weeks into the second semester, you should be able to check your student’s grades in Infinite Campus/Parent Portal. We know that when you sit down with your student on a regular basis and monitor his/her progress, students are more likely to maintain a steady progression in a course.

The other piece we hope you are monitoring is school attendance. There are many positive benefits from regular school attendance. (See Infographic). The state of South Dakota and the Sioux Falls School District considers anything above 10% absenteeism to be excessive. That equates to 17 school days. The school sends out auto-generated attendance notification letters when students have missed 5, 8, 10, 17 and 25 days of school. Please monitor your student’s attendance on Infinite Campus/Parent Portal.

Registration for the 2023-24 school year is also under way. Students received information in their Ad Room last week about registering for classes for next year. We encourage all students to utilize the resources on the Counseling Website: http://www.whscounseling.com/ to assist with the registration process. Course registration must be completed by Friday, February 10.

The Warriors will also be spending February celebrating Black History Month. The month is dedicated to celebrating the achievements and honors of influential persons current and from history. Students who are involved in the Black Student Union Empowerment group take the time to plan announcements, marketing, and activities that highlight achievement. We are especially proud as the most diverse school in the state of South Dakota to recognize the positive impact influencers and role models have in the lives of our students, our community, the nation and the world. We are proud of the rich history and experiences that come together as Warrior Nation.

As we look into March, Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on March 21 and 27 from 4:00 - 7:30. March 21 will be an in-person session and March 27 will be a virtual contact session. You can always reach teachers, counselors, and administrators via email or by calling the school at 605.367.7970.

March 10th: NO SCHOOL - Compensatory Day

March 22nd: Mid-term of 2nd semester

March 21st: Spring Parent Teacher in-person conferences 4:00 pm - 7:30 pm

March 27th: Spring virtual Parent Teacher Conferences

Anatomy & Physiology students will attend the annual USD Cadaver Lab on March 23, 2023. Parent chaperones are needed and invitations to chaperone will be emailed to parents mid-February. Permission slips for students to attend will be sent home at that time also.

Junior and senior students with a cumulative 3.5 GPA or higher (not rounded) at the end of the first semester should be receiving an invitation to apply for the WHS Chapter of National Honor Society at the end of January/beginning of February. Please contact Mrs. Britt Samson with any questions.

++ Auditions for upper bands at WHS are underway. If your student is planning to participate in Freshman or Varsity Band next year, no audition is required. Just sign up! If him/her/they would like to audition for our Concert Band or Symphonic Band, please make sure they are practicing the music which they can get from their middle school band director.

Auditions can be done in person with Mrs. Coyne or recorded at home and/or by a lesson teacher and emailed. The best way is to upload the recording to a Google folder and then share it to Kiley.Coyne@k12.sd.us.

All auditions are due February 24, 2023. When registering for 2023-2024 classes, please just have students register for the band they are in currently and we can update their schedules after audition results. Thanks!

Come join SALSA (Serve And Learn Student Association) as a great way to connect with opportunities to serve your community! SALSA connects high school students to engage them in volunteerism, giving them the opportunity to meet new friends, explore careers, gain leadership experience, earn volunteer hours for scholarship applications, and make a difference in their community. If you missed any meetings, you can come to the next meeting to help support Sanford and learn more about our next large group volunteer outing, serving at the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House otherwise known as a SALSA Wide Event, and other great individual opportunities!

February’s “Deal of the Month” has been so popular over the years that it’s now an annual event. It’s called Feb”hood”ary. The way it works is every item in the store with a “hood” is $10 off for the entire month of February.
