A First Grade Masterpiece... 💕
GVS information...
Thank you to the adults that joined me for one of our GVS information nights. If you were not able to attend, please find the slide presentation attached below. It is mostly some highlights from the family handbook that answer some of the most frequently asked questions asked to me last year.
The family handbook is linked at the bottom of the newsletter.
School starts at 8:30!
We love every minute with our GVS students!
Arrivals after 8:30 are marked tardy.
Before School Program
Only students who are registered for the Before School Program (BSP) may attend the BSP. Those students who are registered should not be dropped off before 7:30 am. There is no staff on duty to watch children who are dropped off before 7:30.
Musical Group Sign Ups
Sign ups for all musical groups are now open! We're offering Band, Jazz Band, Chorus, Guitar, Bell Choir, and Strings. The start date for all lessons and rehearsals is the week of September 18. The link to the sign up can be found here, or on the music page at gvshawks.org music page. Please email Mr. Hoefs at choefs@gvshawks.org if you have any questions!
Grade 4
All of grade 4 is working together with the STEM kits provided to us from The American Precision Museum in Wilder, VT. The kits that they provided us were 100% free. All I had to do was pick them up and they provided one for every 4th grader at GVS. Kits are provided in individual student boxes and include measuring tapes, calipers, flashlights and batteries, mirrors, field notes notebooks, hanging scales, washers, s-hooks, sharpened pencils, cardboard, and cool washi-tape. A digital teacher resources guide was provided with multiple activities and STEM projects that span content areas including music and art! The last activity in the set is an interview with an engineer. It was so generous of APM to share with us! Here is a pic from today's session as the students opened their boxes but the real building of devices will begin at 10:30 tomorrow morning.

A message from our Reading Specialist, Mrs. Buckley:
Celebrating Young Authors at GVS!
This year at GVS, we are excited to showcase the writing of our talented students. Each month, all students from PreK to Grade 6 will respond to the same writing prompt. Every classroom teacher will then select one student’s piece to highlight.
That student will be recognized as the “Author of the Month.” Their writing will be proudly displayed on a bulletin board near the library, and they will receive a special certificate of recognition.
We look forward to celebrating the creativity, voice, and hard work of our GVS writers all year long! This month’s authors will be announced September 19th.
A message from our School Nurse, Mrs. Carey:
Lions Club will be coming to GVS for vision screening on September 30th and October 2nd. This is an all school screening. Permission slips will be sent out as we get closer to the event. The screening is fast, free, and can detect potential visual problems that are potentially overlooked at the pediatrician’s office. Last year we identified 8 students needing further evaluations requiring correction to help them access their education.
The community hike is coming up soon! If your child requires emergency medication and you have not turned them in to the health office, please do so before Wednesday of next week. Bees, food and activity are on the agenda!
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Carey
A message from our School Counselor, Mrs. Widmann:
Unity Day - Change in Logistics
Because we are down to 2 buses, our day is being altered...
Because we are down to 2 buses, and buses need to be back for LMS dismissal... This year, after hiking around the lake, GVS students and staff will bus back to school where we will picnic and play on our playground.
It's that time of year again! GVS is ready to get our outdoors on with the annual Unity Day Hike at Camp Coniston, which is set for Friday, September 19th (with a rain date of September 26th).
Please have your child wear hiking-appropriate shoes, bring a jacket or sweatshirt in case it gets chilly, and carry a backpack with a snack, lunch, water bottle, etc. Make sure they show up ready for the elements, including sun screen and bug spray.
If your student misplaced their permission form, fear not! It is attached below! We welcome parents who would like to chaperone, as well!

TerraCycle
Single sock owners, rejoice!
Did you know you can recycle washed socks in any condition right at school? And not just that, but old school supplies and specific food wrappers can also find new life with the TerraCycle program at GVS. GVS partners with them and Staples to recycle otherwise difficult-to-recycle items. Please see the flyer for a complete list of items you can recycle at our school.
Last year thanks to your efforts, GVS recycled 70# to TerraCycle and 100# to Staples, totaling more than $135, which was donated to the Upper Valley Humane Society.
