Nichols Leadership Academy News #6
A Leader in Me School
Sunday Announcement!
Hello Navigators!
It was amazing to see so many families at our Back to School Night. I enjoyed visiting every class and speaking with so many of you. I am very proud of what we do at Nichols and am grateful for the community support.
Our PTO will hold a Bingo night on Friday at 5:30 in MPR. Check social media and the bulletin board in front of the school for presale information. Scan the QR code on the flyer on bulletin board.
We have a class contest for PTO memberships. Check social media for link and bulletin board for info.
We have a Chipotle fundraiser Wednesday the 17th 4-8 pm. I hope to see you there! It will be at the Chipotle on College Blvd.
The Nichols School Site Council helps make budget and other policy decisions for the school. The council is a two year commitment and is comprised of 5 parents and 5 staff members. This year we have two parent positions open. We have to hold an election to fill these positions. Several people volunteered so please use this form to select our two new representatives. Voting will conclude Monday at 5 PM.
Here is the Title 1 Slide Show that was shared at Back to School Night. It gives an overview of Title 1.
If you want to purchase insurance for your student's device there is a low cost device insurance available. See this flier for more information.
Please remember we are not able to accept outside food for classroom celebrations. Food for class parties need to be ordered through our cafeteria at least one week in advance. If you want the class to celebrate an event speak with the teacher for ideas. Goodie bags with pencils, erasers and small items, versus candy and food is best.
Please note you can always reply to the email portion of this message to communicate with me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Can't wait to see everyone. Have a great night!

September is National Preparedness Month!
Since 2004, FEMA’s Ready Campaign has recognized September as National Preparedness Month—a reminder to take small steps that make a big difference in keeping families safe during emergencies.
This year’s theme, “Preparedness Starts at Home,” highlights the importance of getting back to the essentials of readiness. Families are encouraged to review simple, practical actions that can make all the difference when disaster strikes.
Here are four key steps you can take to prepare your household:
Make a Plan – Know how you’ll communicate and where to meet in case of an emergency.
Build a Kit – Gather essential supplies like food, water, and medications.
Stay Informed – Sign up for local alerts and monitor trusted news sources.
Get Involved – Teach children age-appropriate safety steps and involve them in preparedness activities.
By taking these small actions now, you’ll give your family peace of mind and the tools to respond effectively in any situation.
E-Bikes
Starting in the 2025–2026 school year, all students who plan to ride a bike to school and park it on an OUSD campus must apply for a free E-Bike permit. This process ensures students are educated on safe biking practices. A permit is required to bring an E-Bike onto school grounds.
Thank you for helping us keep our school community safe!
Steps to Complete to ride an E-Bike on any OUSD campus
To ensure the safety of all students riding to school, please complete the following steps:
1. Complete the liability waiver (Data confirmation)
2. Complete the OUSD-approved -Bike Safety Course online: CHP Online Certification
3. Complete the Online Bicycle Permit Application with a Parent or Guardian
4. It is highly encouraged that students register their E-Bike on Project 529 for free in the event their bike is lost or stolen.
PERMIT STICKER MUST BE PLACED ON THE HANDLEBARS!!!
Meal Accommodations:
We are working to gather the Medical Meal Accommodation forms for the 2025–26 school year.
These forms must be submitted to our Nutrition Services Department each school year for any student who requires meal modifications. This applies to both new and returning students.
Per USDA requirements, medical statements must be updated annually, even if a student’s condition or accommodation has not changed. This ensures we have the most accurate documentation to support each student’s needs.
Parents or legal guardians are responsible for submitting completed forms to both the district nurse and the Nutrition Services Department. Forms must be signed by a licensed medical provider to be considered valid.
Reach out with any questions or for any assistance.

Safety Enhancement System
Hello Nichols Families,
After successfully piloting a school safety and audio system at two of our schools during the 23-24 school year, at the June 2024 Board of Education meeting, the Board approved installing this system at all OUSD schools.
This enhancement serves as an update to our current bell and intercom system. Each classroom teacher will have a device on a lanyard that amplifies sound throughout the
classroom during every lesson. Every student, no matter where they sit, will be able to clearly hear the teacher and information being taught.
Along with audio and video capabilities, the new device incorporates a safety notification button to alert administration and front offices of any emergency situation. In the event of a classroom emergency, the teacher can activate the camera for office staff to view the situation. The device identifies the exact location to initiate school safety protocols. Further, and only in the event of a lockdown or active shooter emergency, Oceanside Police Department can utilize these same cameras to access views into classrooms and throughout the school.
Thank you for your constant support as we work to provide a safe and modern learning
environment for all! Slide Deck with more information.
