What is AVID?

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an educational program designed to help students develop the skills they need for success in college and beyond. AVID targets students who are capable of completing rigorous coursework but may need additional support in developing the necessary academic skills. The program emphasizes critical thinking, organization, and study skills while fostering a culture of high expectations.

NOVEMBER: CRITICAL READING - Marking the Text

Marking the text is an active reading strategy that asks students to identify information in the text that is relevant to the reading purpose. This strategy has three distinct marks: numbering paragraphs, underlining, and circling. When students mark texts purposefully, they are actively engaged in meaning making.

DECEMBER: CRITICAL READING - Writing in the Margins

Here are three strategies that help readings understand texts.

Visualize what the author is saying and draw an illustration in the margin.
Clarify complex ideas presented in the text. Readers clarify ideas through a process of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
Respond to ideas in the text as you read. Thoughtful responses will increase engagement and comprehension.

A key element of organization within the AVID program is the use of an AVID binder. This binder serves as a central hub for all student materials and resources.

Structure: The binder is divided into sections that help students categorize their work by subject area.

Materials: It includes dividers for each class, pockets for handouts, a calendar for tracking assignments due dates, and space for notes.

Reflection: Students are encouraged to regularly reflect on their learning by reviewing their notes and setting new goals based on their progress.
