One more day until October!

This week we will continue with lesson 4: Turn it Around, which focuses on the essential question: How can people solve problems with a friend or classmate?

Students will focus on the following skills:

  • How to determine character traits based on a character's words and actions
  • How to compare and contrast characters in a drama using text details
  • Understand how to approach and resolve a problem with a friend or classmate
  • Explaining how characters are similar or different

To support students, explore this guide from the Alaska Department of Early Education and Development: https://education.alaska.gov/akreads/5th%20Grade%20Reading%20Family%20Guide.pdf

Multiplying & Dividing Multi-Digit Numbers

Monday and Tuesday, we will continue Lesson 4: Multiplying Multi-Digit Numbers.

Students will focus on the following skills:

  • Using the Distributive Property to break apart factors in order to solve multiplication problems
  • Multiplying three-, four-, and five-digit numbers by two-digit numbers
  • Using the standard algorithm to solve multi-digit multiplication problems with whole numbers

To help your student feel more successful, practice those math facts at home! Being able to quickly recall multiplication facts makes this process much easier.

We will take our test for this skill on Tuesday.

The following videos may help you and your student practice at home:

The remainder of the week will be dedicated to reviewing the division of multi-digit dividends. This is a difficult skill! Extra practice at home may be necessary for some students.

We will focus on the standards:

5.NBT.5: Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using a standard algorithm.

5.NBT.6: Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, number lines, real life situations, and/or area models.

Nurturing

During the month of October, we will be focusing on nurturing. We can nurture ourselves and one another by:

Using a growth mindset and positive thinking about our abilities

Speaking kindly to one another

Brainstorm at home: What are some ways we can nurture ourselves and others?
