Sycamore Springs
Weekly Newsletter
September 29, 2024
Hello Sycamore Springs Middle School Families,
Happy Sunday! I hope you and your family are enjoying the weekend. It is hard to believe that October is just around the corner. As we inch closer to the end of Term 1, make sure your students are putting first things first and meeting with their teachers if they have missing assignments or questions. The end of Term 1 is on October 11.
This week is also Homecoming Week! Students and staff are encouraged to dress up each day (see themes below). The Homecoming parade, pep rally, and carnival is Wednesday at DSHS, and then the homecoming football game against Austin High is Friday night at Tiger Stadium! Go Tigers!
If you need anything or have any questions, please reach out to your student's teacher, counselor, or administrator.
Go Tigers!
Sincerely,
Kelly Miller
Principal

2. Coffee & Chat w/ Principal Miller - this Thursday (10/3) from 8-9am we are hosting our first Coffee & Chat session for the year. We will review all our upcoming events, get an update on construction, and have some time for questions. We hope you can join us!

4. On October 1, the 2024-2025 Credit by Exam for Acceleration, Credit Recovery, & Grade Placement Guide, the September 26, 2024 Advanced Academics & Gifted and Talented Parent Meeting presentation, and the credit by exam testing calendar, referral links, and study guides will be available here. The referral deadline is Friday, October 25th, and testing will occur on Saturday, November 11th. Parents of students who register for fall testing will be provided with test day details at a later date. All fall testing results will apply to the 2025-2026 school year. Questions may be directed to Dr. Rhonda Whitman via email or a phone call (512-858-3053). Click HERE to see the flyer in English and Spanish.

6. We are happy to announce that the 2024 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) is now open! This is the sixth year that Congressman Roy has hosted a CAC for his district, TX-21. Students middle through high school are encouraged to compete. Attached is a flier with details about the CAC and how to register online.
7. Calling all 7th and 8th graders who want to join us this May on the Close up trip to Washington DC! If you are interested in learning more about The Close up trip to DC, please join us and a Close Up representative on Wednesday, October 23rd at 6pm in the SSMS cafeteria. The trip is scheduled for May 25-29, 2025. For questions, reach out to Coach Hulett at megan.hulett@dsisdtx.us or check out the FAQ. More information can also be found further down in the newsletter.
8. Student Attendance is Critical for Student Success. Our goal for this year is to increase our Average Daily Attendance (ADA) by 1%.
- When students are out, they miss critical learning opportunities that cannot be duplicated. Since we are on a block schedule, missing one day means they actually miss two days' worth of lessons. This adds up and creates learning gaps.
- Please click HERE for information on how to report an absence, attendance office contact information, attendance times, and additional information. To access the Attendance Matters in DSISD flyer, click HERE.
We hope you all enjoyed the weekend! It is hard to believe October is here this week!
We finished week 3 of our Smart but Scattered Book Study. Thanks to those parents who were able to join! If you want to join us next week please do so! We will be meeting virtually through Google Meets at noon on Thursdays. For more details and to sign up click here. We will be covering chapters 7 & 8 this week.
On Oct. 9 & 10, 6th graders will receive a guidance lesson on Global Satisfaction & Hope.
Tiger leaders will be in Tiger Win classes for all grade levels on October 15-18 & October 21. They will present their Better Together lesson on Bullying/Self Advocacy.
Red Ribbon week is October 21-October 25. Our awesome student council is putting together activities for this week.
Dripping Springs ISD has partnered with Terrace Metrics to understand & support the resiliency & well-being of our students. All 7th Grade students will have the opportunity to take this assessment on Oct. 23 or 24th via Tiger Win classes. Active consent is required from parents/guardians for their student(s) to participate in the evaluation. This means that we will not administer the assessment to any student with a parental/guardian consent status of no and no response consent. Only students with a parental/guardian consent status of yes will be allowed to participate. Before the Terrace Metrics parental consent window closes, we will host two 7th-grade parent meetings to provide information and answer questions about the Terrace Metrics Assessment. Please join us on October 7th from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or October 8th from 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., both in the Pecan room at SSMS. A separate email will be sent to all 7th-grade parents/guardians with more information.
We hope you all had a great weekend and wish you a great week ahead!

SSMS Runners of the Week: Sept. 16th to Sept. 20th
SSMS XC is excited to recognize our Runners of the Week for September 16th to September 20th. The following veteran team members lead by example and carry the legacy of SSMS XC with them on every trail:
Brielle Ficzeri: This young lady goes the distance at practice and outside of practice as well knowing that putting in the work pays off. Her consistent focus to grow herself and her teammates as runners is evident in the understanding and encouragement she shows others on the trails and the goal setting that she puts into action on the trails for herself. Brielle, understands that as a runner, you have to work with your body to find your "groove" and is always helpful to those still navigating the "adventure" that sometimes involves "feeding the wildlife." Brielle, thank you for your leadership. Your trail has only just begun...
Jackson Prom: Like many of our runners, Jackson balances an incredibly full list of activities to show up early to the trail each day. His positivity and pure joy of running and his teammates is contagious. Thank you Jackson for modeling the respect and kindness on the trails that is the legacy of SSMS XC and representing the unlimited possibilities that each of your teammates has as a student-athlete. Your successes on the trail and in the classroom are proof of a self-motivation that will take you far on whatever course you run!
Congratulations!
Coach McGilvray
SSMS XC Blazes the Trails at West Ridge!
On Tuesday, Sept. 17th, the temperatures weren't the only thing blazing at West Ridge. SSMS XC pushed through the hottest temperatures this season and the most hills we've seen, to blaze to new accomplishments!
Congratulations to our 8th grade divisions for their team awards. The 8th grade girls brought home the gold with a 1st place finish in their division . The 8th grade boys brought home the silver with a 2nd place finish in their division. Our 7th grade divisions continued to push their PRs and push each other on the trail. Congratulations, 7th grade, your continued focus and effort is visible.
A huge shout out to our 11 individual medalists at West Ridge. For the 7th grade girls, Zoey R. (1st), Brooke M (4th) and Juliana M. (6th). For the 7th grade boys, Caleb R (1st), Adam A (3rd), and Henry Z (10th). For our 8th grade girls: Gemma M (3rd) and McKinley L (5th). For our 8th grade boys: Jonah S. (6th), Levi G. (8th) and Lucca V. (10th).
As each runner pushes themselves farther faster, the following runners are SO close to making the top 10 in their division. Keep running your race, you'll get there by continuing to put in the work at practice and on the trails: Emerson M. (7B, 12th), Brielle (11th, 8G), Colleen A (12th, 8G) and Jackson P (13th, 8B).
Finally, as a "hand timed" meet, a huge THANK YOU to the following 8th grade runners who helped out behind the scenes to let their SycaMORE shine by running the trails and assisting with team timing records. I could not have managed all the details without the assistance of these SSMS XC leaders: Alex G, Eliza J., Emily C., Kennedy L., Kierra C., Levi G., and Lucca V.
π£ Cheer π€ΈββοΈ
Our cheerleader of the week is Aubrey Gray! She is such an incredible leader! She always rises to the occasion and puts her heart into everything she does. No matter what the situation is, she's always ready to lend a hand. What she brings to our cheer squad is truly remarkable, and we can always rely on her to give her absolute best!
