Spotlight on Ben Joo!

Congratulations to Junior Ben Joo for winning the individual golf county championship on Monday at Fairway Hills!

Ben shot a 3 over 75 to capture the school’s first individual county title since 2019.

CHS Celebrates National Writing Day!

On Tuesday, October 20th, the National English Honor Society helped our school celebrate National Writing Day!

Each year, we join students and teachers across the country to share our collective love and appreciation of written words. Our NEHS members decorated the front of the school with colorful chalk and sayings, and student leaders from the group adorned custom t-shirts designed by sophomore member Daxtyn Linton. A limited number of t-shirts remain for purchase on OSP if you would like to support our chapter. Daxtyn is willing to paint a positive phrase of your choice on the back if you provide details in the purchase description and shirts can be ordered either with or without this year's date included.

Happy Writing, Eagles!

Amy Gu Published in National High School Journal of Science

Congratulation to Amy Gu (senior) on the publication of her research "From Harm to Healing: The Association Between Social Media Content and Adolescents’ Recovery from Anorexia Nervosa", in the National High School Journal of Science.

The abstract for the research highlights that: As the prevalence of anorexia nervosa and social media use increases, the central question of this research was to examine the correlation between social media content, particularly content that falls into the categories of pro-recovery and pro-anorexia, and anorexia recovery.

Amy began this research during sophomore year in her Independent Research class.

Save the Date for Our Fall Theatre Production

Join us for Failure: A Love Story, our 2026-2027 Main Stage Fall Play!

Here's what to expect...

By the end of 1928, all three Fail sisters will be dead – expiring in reverse order, youngest to oldest, from blunt object to the head, disappearance, and finally consumption. Tuneful songs, and a whimsical chorus follow the story of Nelly, Jenny June, and Gerty as they live out their lives above the family clock repair shop near the Chicago River, before their time unexpectedly runs out. A magical, musical fable where, in the end, the power of love is far greater than any individual‘s successes or failures. (From Concord Theatricals).

And we'd be amiss not to mention the parakeets, talking snake, the ever-watching clocks, and the wonderful gramophone who make up the world of Fail Clock Works. Come fall in love with this dark comedic fairy-tale set in 1920s Chicago.

Recommended for Middle School students and up.

Content Warning - while the script and characters are PG, the play does deal with death, loss, and grief. The play uses comedy to explore these concepts, so we encourage everyone to use their own personal discretion as to their viewing preferences.

Bullying Prevention Message

Parents/Guardians & Families,

Bullying prevention starts at home, too. Families can make a difference by keeping the lines of communication open and regularly talking with children about friendships, school experiences, group chats, social media, and how they and their peers treat one another.

Encourage your child to identify trusted adults they can turn to when something doesn't feel right. Talk about what they can safely do if they witness someone being mistreated—such as getting an adult, refusing to join in or laugh, checking on the student afterward, or reporting what they saw.

Being an upstander applies online, too. Remind children that liking, sharing, forwarding, commenting on, or reposting hurtful content can increase its impact. Instead, encourage them to avoid participating, save evidence when appropriate, support the person being targeted, and tell a trusted adult.

Children also learn from what they see. Modeling kindness, empathy, inclusion, and respect for others helps reinforce the behaviors we want to see in our schools and communities.

Talk. Notice. Include. Speak Up. Together, we can help create communities where every student feels safe, supported, and valued.

More bullying prevention information and resources can be found on the HCPSS Stop Bullying website.

We’re looking for careers that students can access from any of the post high school pathways (Military, Job, 2yr/4yr, Trade school, Apprenticeship). Thank you.

RTA Bus Passes

Thanks to a continued partnership between HCPSS, Howard County Government, and Regional Transportation Agency (RTA), all HCPSS middle and high school students have access to free RTA bus passes through summer 2027. Students have full access to the RTA system and are not limited to transportation to and from schools or to school-related activities.

If your child is interested, they can visit Student Services to request a free pass. To obtain the free student bus pass, students must agree to:

  • Provide name/student ID, address, and grade to school staff

  • Maintain possession of the pass

  • Not transfer or share the pass with others

  • Abide by Howard County Public School System rules while on-board.

Note: If the pass is lost or misplaced, only one replacement pass will be provided to the student.

Howard County government and the Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland also have a digital bus pass program, enabling students to access free RTA bus passes directly from their phones or smart devices using a mobile app. Students who do not have access to a smart phone may still receive a free, printed bus pass from their school office.

For more information on RTA and detailed schedule information, please call 1-800-270-9553 or visit Transit RTA.

Naloxone Training Opportunity

In Howard County, addressing substance misuse among youth, including opioid use, remains a critical public health priority. Fatal overdoses have been steadily declining since 2022, a success largely driven by widespread naloxone distribution and acceptance. Yet, substance misuse among our youth is still an ongoing risk. According to the 2024 Maryland Youth Risk Behavior Survey, almost 10% of middle school students and 12.5% of high school students in Howard County reported taking prescription pain medication without a prescription or differently than prescribed.

As a parent, you play a vital role in protecting your children and your community. Scan the QR code on this flier or use this link [https://www.howardcountymd.gov/health/opioid-overdose-response-program] to access our free, on-demand naloxone training. In just 10-15 minutes you can gain the skills needed to respond to an opioid overdose. You can take the training alone, with your child or with the whole family. After you complete the training, you can receive a free naloxone kit.
