An Eighth Grade Exchange Edition #17
Happy March, 8th Grade Families!
Spring is just around the corner, and March brings with it important observances. Women's History Month gives us the opportunity to recognize and honor the countless women whose contributions have shaped our world through their courage, wisdom, and leadership. This observance is particularly significant now, as it reminds us of the ongoing struggle for equality and the vital importance of diverse perspectives in addressing today's challenges. Our students are learning about groundbreaking women in science, politics, literature, and other fields who have overcome barriers to make lasting impacts on society.
Our 8th grade students are continuing to celebrate Black History Month in their "Houses" and through upcoming challenges, extending our commitment to honoring diverse histories and perspectives beyond February.
March 17th marks St. Patrick's Day, a time when many celebrate Irish heritage and traditions.
Don't forget β Spirit Week begins next week as we countdown to Spring Break! Students can show their school pride through daily themes, so check the schedule in the newsletter for what to wear each day.
Please take a moment to read through the entire newsletter carefully, as it contains important dates and information about upcoming events. If you have any questions or wonderings, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teachers, the main office, or myself!
Wishing everyone a wonderful March!

π¬ 5 Essentials Survey π¬
Dear Nichols Families,
At Nichols, we deeply value our partnership with you and your feedback is essential in shaping the future of our school community. The 5Essentials Survey provides a powerful opportunity for you to share your thoughts on what weβre doing well and where we can grow. Your input helps guide decisions that directly impact your scholarβs experience, and we are committed to using this feedback to continue strengthening our school. At present we only have one parent response and my goal is to get 100% participation because I know I have the BEST caregivers in the world!
This year, we have prioritized building strong family partnerships in many ways, including:
- Hosting Listening Tours to hear directly from families.
- Maintaining an Open-Door Policy for caregivers to connect with us.
- Responding to Concerns Promptlyβwithin 48 hours for general matters and 24 hours (including weekends) for emergencies.
- Providing Clear & Timely Communication through newsletters and updates.
- Securing a Crossing Guard at Sherman and Greenleaf to ensure student safety.
- Being Present & Engagedβshowing up where it matters most.
- Gathering Parent Feedback through surveys and implementing viable suggestions.
- Prioritizing Your Scholar in every decision we make.
- Recognizing & Celebrating Diversity, while introducing new initiatives that foster a true sense of belonging, such as our Nichols Citizens Book Club, Parent Town Hall, and meaningful student engagement on half days.
Your voice is critical in helping us continue this work! Please take a few moments to complete the 5Essentials Survey and let us know how we can keep growing together.
Thank you for your time, trust, and continued partnership in making Nichols the best it can be for our scholars. For your convenience, here is the link https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/
