Weekly Newsletter 5/1/26
Hello and happy Friday!
We've had a nice week coming back from vacation. It feels like we've officially crossed over into spring and things are greening up right before our eyes. Speaking of "greening up" --I want to thank all of our students and teachers for doing their part to pick up trash and debris out and around the school this week. Green Up Day is officially tomorrow, Saturday May 2nd, and I hope we can work together to pick up the litter on our roadsides. It's a nice state-wide event that teaches kids one simple thing they can do to take care of our environment.
A highlight of the week was the 5th Grade Exhibition on Thursday. All 19 fifth graders worked incredibly hard for the past two or more months to research a topic, organize their findings and compile the information into a presentation. They made visual presentations, booklets, pamphlets and slide shows, and each group came up with an Action Project that included a specific thing they could do to make a difference in their community. Each year the students use the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the basis for their topics of study. It was great to learn about important topics like microplastics in our waterways and food, endangered species, gender equality in sports, Eurasian milfoil, Goat vs. Cow milk and the importance of kids spending time outside. See below for some great photos of this event.
Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please see the information below from Kristen regarding the amazing ways FOSCS helps teachers and staff at SCS feel appreciated. Thank you, in advance, for this incredible effort.
Have a great weekend and see you soon,
Tracey

Outside Trail Work & Green Up
Students worked hard to clean up outside spaces and roadsides this week. Kids in 3rd & 4th grades enjoyed a special trash talk from Captain Trash (who taught the Trash Queen a thing or two about littering) before greening up on Wednesday.
5th Grade Exhibition!
Fifth graders presented their research and action steps to family members, students and district guests during Exhibition on Thursday. Well done, fifth graders!
Thank you, Ms. Elyse!
Ms. Elyse finished up her semester of classroom observation and interning with the first grade class. It was great having her at SCS and we hope she'll be back soon!

Teacher Appreciation Week is next week!
Teacher Appreciation Week: May 3 - 8
Every year we honor our teachers and staff with a week of appreciation filled with different events to show our thanks and gratitude for all they do each and every day to bring knowledge, community, and advancement to all the students at SCS. To that end, we are inviting our community to take part in the following:
- Sunday, May 3 1-4PM Chalk the Walk Event (Facebook Event) - Come join us at SCS this Sunday to help fill our sidewalks with words and drawings of support and thanks for our teachers and staff. FOSCS will provide the chalk and be there for any current, former, or future students and families to help cover our sidewalks with joy! Please spread the word and stop in anytime from 1-4PM on Sunday.
- Monday, May 3 - Friday, May 15 Teacher Appreciation Station - FOSCS will have a Teacher Appreciation Station located just across from the front office by Miss Donna. The station will have labeled bags for each SCS teacher and staff member, note cards, paper, and writing utensils. We encourage all families, students, teachers, and staff to take a moment to share notes of thanks and place them in the bag for the teacher and/or staff member. If you can’t stop by the station, feel free to write these notes at home and bring them in to place in the individual bags. These will be delivered to each teacher and staff member at the end of the school year.
