Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
Each November, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States. The month provides time to celebrate and honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples.
The origins of this national observance trace back more than a century. In 1916, New York became the first state to declare an “American Indian Day,” following years of advocacy by Red Fox James of the Blackfeet Nation, who rode horseback across the country seeking support from state governments. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. Since then, every U.S. president has issued proclamations reaffirming the importance of honoring Native heritage.
At HF, we continue to celebrate the diverse stories of our community and those who have come before us.
'93 Alum Ben Bradley Brings His WGN Team to HF
1993 HF Alum and Emmy-Award Winning Journalist Ben Bradley is one of Chicago's Very Own!
Ben brought his WGN Chicago team to HF to see firsthand what makes the school so special, and to talk about two teachers in particular that have made a huge difference in his life. "I was that nerdy kid who always knew I wanted to be a journalist," he says. "This school didn't teach me broadcasting--it taught me everything that I needed to know to pursue journalism."
Jennifer J. works at the school and is a proud member of the South Suburban community. "I've never seen a community that is so supportive of its students and staff and the work that we do here," she says. Check it out below!
