Parent Hawk Talk
August 3rd - 7th
Principal's Notes
Dear Parents and Families,
Our Prep Day was a tremendous success! Thank you to every family, volunteer, student, and staff member who gave their time and energy to make it one of our best ever.
This year, we tried something new by moving Prep Day to a single evening event, making it easier for families to attend without missing work or rearranging busy schedules. The response was incredible and reminded us that when we are willing to rethink how we've always done things, great things can happen.
That same spirit of continuous improvement will guide us throughout the school year. At Hobby, we believe every student can succeed, and we are committed to providing the support, opportunities, and high expectations that help each child reach their full potential.
I am honored to serve as the principal of Hobby. Our students, families, and staff make this an exceptional school, and our success is built on the strong partnership we share with you. Thank you for trusting us with your children—we look forward to another outstanding year together.
Our teachers have been hard at work preparing classrooms and creating engaging learning experiences, and we are excited to welcome students back on August 10!
Finally, please join me in welcoming our new Academic Dean, Dr. Brynn Caddell, to the Hobby family. She has already hit the ground running, and we are excited to have her as part of our leadership team.
We can't wait to see everyone on August 10. Here's to a fantastic school year!
Best Regards,
Gregory Dylla
Principal, Hobby Middle School
Safety and Security Updates
If you've been part of the Hobby community for the past several years, you know that the safety and security of our students and staff is always our top priority.
Over the last few years, Northside ISD has made significant investments to enhance campus security. These improvements include the perimeter fence surrounding our campus, the new secure entry vestibule, the magnet classroom addition, storefront security doors at the parent pickup and bus loop areas, and upgraded door alarms and monitoring systems. These enhancements help us provide a safer and more secure learning environment for all students.
As a result of these security upgrades, we are making a change to our morning arrival procedures.
In previous years, students arriving as early as 7:00 a.m. were allowed to enter the cafeteria. Unfortunately, due to current staffing, we are no longer able to provide supervision inside the building before 7:30 a.m.
Beginning this school year:
Students arriving before 7:30 a.m. should wait under the front entrance awning in the designated parent pickup area.
At 7:30 a.m., a staff member will open the doors and begin supervising students for the remainder of the morning until classes begin.
Please note that exceptions will be made for students participating in approved early morning practices, rehearsals, tutorials, or other school-sponsored activities that require arrival before 7:30 a.m. Coaches, sponsors, and activity leaders will communicate arrival procedures and ensure students are appropriately supervised during those times.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we adjust our procedures to maintain a safe, secure, and well-supervised campus. Thank you for partnering with us to keep Hobby a safe place for every student.
From Hobby Magnet
Get ready to see how our school community truly soars! When you walk onto our campus, you will get a special look into what makes our campus so extraordinary—and it turns out, we can learn a lot from a flock of geese. Just like geese flying in formation, our staff and students thrive because we share the workload, encourage one another through every challenge, and make sure no one flies alone. It’s this culture of mutual support, shared leadership, and constant encouragement that makes our school such a warm, successful place for your children to grow. We are so excited to begin year four with our Magnet program on this amazing campus where we are all Hawks!
Communication Updates
ClassDojo: Strengthening Home-to-School Communication
This year as part of our commitment to improving communication between school and home, Hobby will be using ClassDojo as our primary communication platform. ClassDojo will help keep families connected with teachers and informed about classroom updates, school events, and important announcements.
On August 7, students will be placed into their final class rosters within ClassDojo, allowing families to see their child's teacher before the first day of school. Families will also receive an automatic invitation to join their child's classroom.
Because some contact information in our student information system may be outdated or incomplete, a few families may not receive their invitation right away. If you do not receive an invitation on August 7, don't worry—our staff will be reaching out to ensure every family is successfully connected before the school year begins.
We look forward to using ClassDojo to strengthen our partnership with our families and keep everyone informed throughout the year.
From Your Academic Dean
Meet Your New Academic Dean: Dr. Brynn Caddell
I am so thrilled to introduce myself as your new Academic Dean! Entering my 18th year in education, this role feels extra special to me—as a proud product of NISD (having attended Braun Station, Stevenson MS, and O’Connor High School), serving this community is truly a homecoming.
Over the course of my career, I’ve had the privilege of serving students and families in a variety of roles, including English teacher, AVID teacher, Student Success Advisor, ESL teacher, District High School ESL Specialist, and most recently, District PK–12 Newcomer Program Coordinator. Through it all, my passion has always been creating high-quality learning experiences, fostering student growth, and ensuring every child has the support they need to succeed.
As a fellow parent—my husband and I are raising three daughters alongside the animals on our little farm—I deeply value the partnership between home and school. I am excited to work alongside our talented teachers and partner with you to make this a wonderful, inspiring school year for your children!
From APO
Welcome back, Hawk Families!
We hope everyone is well-rested and ready for a new year filled with exciting learning experiences. Below are a few key items to put your mind at ease as we jump into the school year. For our returning families, this information might be a quick refresher; for our new Hobby Hawks, this information will help ensure a smooth, stress-free transition to our campus!

Student ID Cards
Important Update: Students are now required to scan their student IDs both upon entering and departing the bus.
New Students & 6th Graders: All 6th graders, new students, and mid-year enrollees who did not previously receive an ID will be issued one at no cost.

Students must be up to date on state required immunizations or have appropriate exemption documentation on file at school. If you have questions regarding current immunizations, contact Mrs. Montes, the school nurse at (210) 397-6254.
Community Eligibility Provision Form (E-CEP)
The E-CEP form is crucial for determining our school funding, state aid, and fee waivers. As a Title I school, this form helps Hobby secure federal, state, and local educational resources so we can continue meeting the needs of our diverse student population—including providing free breakfast and lunch for all students.
Already completed? If you attended Prep-Day, this form was completed online during registration.
Need to complete? If you have not filled it out yet, your student will be coming home with a physical copy. Please complete and return it as soon as possible so we can continue to provide essential resources, high-quality programs, and free meals for every student on our campus.
We look forward to another successful and rewarding school year together!

Dress Code: Dress for Success!
Dress Code: Dress for Success School staff recognizes that parents bear the primary responsibility for setting standards for their children’s dress and grooming. However, because of health and safety factors, the influence of dress and grooming on students’ attitude and behavior, and because of the need to prevent disruptive influences and preserve the academic environment of the school, student dress and grooming are appropriate concerns of teachers and administrators. The district’s dress code is implemented (Section D); therefore, students will be expected to follow the guidelines set forth by the district. Dress code standards are extended to extra-curricular activities held on the campus. In an effort to promote a safe and positive school environment which is conducive to learning, students should wear appropriate clothing that will not cause disruptions in learning or safety. Inappropriate, indecent, suggestive or distracting clothing will not be allowed. *Final determination of acceptable dress code and grooming rests with the Principal or his/her designees.
Please Note
Part of supporting our students’ academic and social growth involves maintaining a disruption-free learning space. With that in mind, we want to gently remind our community about our campus dress code expectations—specifically regarding student hairstyles.
Starting this term, we will be fully aligning our campus practices with our NISD dress code policy:
Expectation: Hair must be neat, clean, and kept in a way that does not cause a distraction to the teaching and learning environment.
