Reading Comprehension For All Ages

Whether reading aloud to your child or if your child is reading to you, below are some questions you could ask your child about their reading.

Before Reading (Predictions & Prior Knowledge)

  • Looking at the cover, what do you think this book is about?

  • What makes you think that?

  • Does this story remind you of anything you've done or read before?

  • What do you think will happen in the story?

During Reading (Active Thinking)

  • What is happening in this picture?

  • Why do you think the character did that?

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • How do you think the character feels right now?

  • Can you tell me what happened so far (using first, then, last)?

After Reading (Reflecting & Summarizing)

  • Who was your favorite character and why?

  • What was the main problem in the story?

  • How was the problem solved?

  • What was your favorite part of the story?

  • Can you tell me the story in your own words?

For Non-Fiction/Information Books

  • What is one new thing you learned?

  • What was the main topic of this book?

  • What did the pictures teach you?

Teen Numbes

Teen numbers are really tricky to learn for a lot of reasons! The first reason is that when learning to count using the number words, they don't have a pattern. Eleven and twelve are the most challenging! The other numbers at least end with the same sound teen.

Teen numbers are also the beginning of learning all about place value. It is really important to see that each teen number has one group of ten. This number blocks video makes numbers in the teens very visual!

Please see the attached PDF to practice counting and writing teen numbers. Please pay special attention to writing left to right. When writing the digit one first, remind students that this represents one group of ten.

Exploring with the Equal Sign

Here are some activities you can do at home to help deepen mathematical understanding. Finding the missing number is one of my favorite games! If you don't have counters at home, just use some goldfish, cheerios, or dry beans. If numbers to twenty is too challenging, try numbers to ten or even just numbers to five.

Counting, Adding, Subtracting Three Digit Numbers

Second grade is working hard with three digit numbers! Here are some ways you can help at home!

First, practice counting at home. You don't have to count objects and you don't have to count to 1,000 every day, but practice counting. Practice starting at a number like 198 and counting up to 215. Practice counting backwards. Say I'm going to start at 85 and count to 50.

Second, have fun playing the game provided. It will show you how students talk about and represent larger numbers.

Lastly, see the essential vocabulary that students need to participate in math!
