Your monthly newsletter for LSSPs in the Region 10 Area
Letter from the 'Editor'
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Keya Saleh. I am the new LSSP consultant here at Region 10. For a background, I am a Houston native and an alumni of the University of Houston and Trinity University (Go Cougars and Tigers!) I worked in Northside ISD in San Antonio as an LSSP before moving to Dallas where I was an LSSP and Coordinator for Richardson ISD. Much of my free time is spent hanging out with my family (wife, daughter, and dog), reading books (currently, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel Pink), or falling asleep re-watching old sitcoms (Scrubs at the moment).
But enough about me, let's talk about you! My position is new and was added to Region 10 based on a lot of feedback and requests from the member districts. There were a number of requests for more support for LSSPs in making sure they are equipped to deal with the myriad of emotional and behavioral challenges that seem to be only increasing in our schools.
Like any good LSSP, the first thing I did in this position was collect data. I sent out a survey to every email address I could find to get some feedback about who was out there and what kinds of needs there were (and if you didn't get the survey, there still time to provide your input here). This feedback is going to be turned around and used for future planning for upcoming trainings and supports. In fact, the feedback is already being put to work, as one of the most requested things was a monthly newsletter!
The goals of this newsletter are still in flux, but some of the things that will be featured are upcoming training opportunities, ideas and resources for your practice, interesting articles, and generally useful information. We also want to make the newsletter interactive and will feature some polls and questions from time to time to get information from you.
I hope you will find some value in this newsletter and look forward to it hitting your inbox. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please send in your feedback here. If you have any questions of any kind, please feel free to reach out to me directly as well (contact info is at the bottom).

Secrets to Self-Compassion
Check out this great coffee break interview by Dr. Rebecca Branstetter, The Thriving School Psychologist, with Dr. Kristin Neff on Self-Compassion and strategies for LSSPs:
Intervention/Strategy: 2 by 10
If a teacher has a strained (or non-existent) relationship with a particular student, that teacher may want to jump-start a more positive pattern of interaction using the 'two-by-ten' intervention (Mendler, 2000). With this time-efficient strategy, the teacher commits to having a positive 2-minute conversation with the student at least once per day across 10 consecutive school days. The active ingredient in the intervention is regular and positive teacher attention delivered at times when the student is not misbehaving. After the 10-day intervention, teachers often find that their relationships with formerly problematic students have improved markedly.
